Job description

Job Summary

Field Technician performing electrical and mechanical troubleshooting, repairs and modifications on rail cars during final assembly or at remote sites of A. James Global Services, Inc. Use hand tools, multimeters and PC‑based test equipment, read piping diagrams, mechanical drawings, technical manuals and electrical schematics to accomplish assignments.

Responsibilities
  • Perform test procedures on HVAC, brakes, propulsion, communications, toilet, trainline, sign, automatic train control and other systems.
  • Conduct functional tests, high‑potential tests, wining continuity tests, pneumatic leakage tests, dynamic tests and burn‑in tests.
  • Assist and support the engineering group on various engineering tests.
  • Interact with customers, communicate clearly and confidently, and provide accurate test documentation and reports.
  • Operate independently, take lead on assignments, guide function test technicians or rail car technicians.
  • Initiate vendor, engineering or manufacturing support and report results to supervisor.
  • Enter discrepancies into database system and accurately report hours worked.
Qualifications
  • Previous work experience in electrical or mechanical testing.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical school or associate degree in engineering preferred.
  • Proficient reading, writing, speaking English.
  • Read and understand electrical schematics and blue‑prints / mechanical drawings.
  • Proficient with basic hand and power tools.
  • Proficient with multimeter, chart recorder, oscilloscope, network analyzers, etc.
  • Basic proficiency with portable test equipment (PTE) and ability to download / analyze data.
  • Proficient in the English metric system and able to learn metric within specified time.
  • Capable of working under pressure with specific deadlines.
  • Flexible to work any shift, including flexible hours.
  • Able to climb stairs and ladders and lift, push or pull up to 40 lbs.
  • Comfortable working in a rail yard environment.
  • Willing to travel on business trips or field assignments; extensive travel may be needed.
  • Proficient with MS Office applications and other industry‑related software applications.
  • Ability to lead tasks, assist other technicians, and work independently.
  • Coherent report writing, consolidate reports.
  • Troubleshoot using downloads, schematics, and manuals; analyze problems/data and issue comprehensive reports detailing analysis.
  • Communicate clearly with customers and other company personnel.
