Job summary

American Engineering Testing Inc. in Sioux Falls, SD is seeking a Field Supervisor to oversee day-to-day field operations on construction materials testing projects.

You will be the interface between clients and technicians, interpret project plans, and provide leadership, communication, and problem-solving on site. You will direct staff, mentor technicians, ensure safety, and align work with ASTM/AASHTO/MnDOT requirements.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 years of hands-on experience in construction materials testing or related engineering services.
• 0–2 years of direct supervisory experience required.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

Responsibilities

• Assign and coordinate daily project schedules for field staff based on workload and testing complexity.
• Provide technical guidance and quality control on field procedures (soils, concrete, asphalt, aggregate, and specialty materials testing).
• Perform or assist with complex field investigations, sampling procedures, and test observations.
• Review and approve field documentation (daily field reports, timesheets, expenses, mileage logs).
• Support the use of AET’s systems for accurate project tracking and reporting (QEST, Dynamics).
• Serve as a point of contact for field-level project inquiries with project managers and clients.
• Ensure client specifications and industry standards (ASTM, AASHTO, MnDOT) are met on active sites.
• Support development and delivery of timely testing results and project documentation.
• Mentor, coach, and train staff in field methods, safety, and client interaction.
• Conduct performance check-ins and annual reviews; support certifications (ACI, NICET, MnDOT).
• Help manage field onboarding and certifications tracking with HR.
• Lead field team meetings to reinforce safety and project updates.
• Monitor productivity, technician utilization, and overtime management.
• Assist with profitability targets through scheduling, quality, and cost control.

Job Summary

The Field Supervisor at American Engineering Testing, Inc. (AET) is r esponsible for overseeing the day-to-day technical operations on projects, ensuring the project is completed safely, on time, and within budget by being the interface between client and technicians acting as a source matter expert when called upon. Will be able to interpret project plans as well as demonstrate exceptional leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Direct and oversee staff activities in accordance with the company’s plan. Assist in developing department technical capability and facilitating growth. • Mentor, coach, and train new and junior technicians in proper field methods, safety procedures, and client interaction.
• Conduct regular performance check-ins and annual reviews; support employees with development goals and certifications (e.g., ACI, NICET, MnDOT).
• Help manage field onboarding and certifications tracking, working closely with Department and HR teams.
• Lead field team meetings or tailgate talks to reinforce safety, project updates, and process improvements.
• Monitor and support project productivity, technician utilization, and overtime management.
• Assist with maintaining project and department profitability targets through scheduling, quality, and cost control.
• Help track prevailing wage compliance, WIP status, and project documentation accuracy in collaboration with project managers.
• Enforce AET’s health and safety practices on all job sites; conduct spot checks and incident follow-ups as needed.
• Uphold QA/QC standards through review of field practices, calibrations, and proper documentation.
• Promote a positive team culture rooted in safety, respect, professionalism, and accountability.

Supervisory Responsibility

• This position has full day-to-day supervisory responsibility over field staff, including performance management, training, and day-to-day operational oversight.

Required Qualifications and Education Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent required.

Preferred Skills

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering , Construction Management, or Geology preferred.
• Field certifications such as ACI Field Testing Grade I, NICET, or equivalent.
• Strong working knowledge of field standards and test methods (ASTM, AASHTO).
• Experience using project tracking systems such as QEST or Microsoft Dynamics.
• Excellent communication and team leadership skills, with the ability to train and motivate technicians.
• Proven ability to manage shifting priorities in a high-volume, fast-paced field environment.

Pay Transparency

Base compensation is expected to be in the range of $31.00 and $41.00 per hour based on skill set and experience. The selected candidate must be authorized to work for any employer in the U.S. without requiring visa sponsorship now or in the future.

This job operates in a professional office environment and in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and must be able to enter and work in facilities that include limited accessibility, heights, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.
