Job summary

Bechtel is seeking a Rigging Superintendent to supervise crane and rigging operations on a major gas-fired power project. You will lead craft professionals, enforce safety and Bechtel procedures, and coordinate with subcontractors to meet schedule and budget targets.

The role requires a strong background in crane operations, rigging, and OSHA standards, plus the ability to develop look-ahead plans and ensure qualified personnel are on site.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Management or other relevant technical disciplines from an accredited university and 5–8 years of relevant work experience, or 9–12 years without a degree.
  • Heavy industrial direct hire construction experience commensurate with the type of work.
  • Experience in oil, gas, refinery, petrochemical or power generation construction preferred.
  • Excellent communication and problem‑solving ability.

Project Overview

The rapid growth of AI and digitalization is fueling unprecedented demand for data centers that require large, reliable sources of energy. In response to this market trend, the Renewables & Clean Power (R&CP) team have signed an early works contract to build one of the largest gas fired power generation facilities in the U.S. The Tallgrass CCGT project is of significant scale and complexity, and our team is helping the customer progress early-stage development, that would lead to the start of full EPC delivery this year. The candidate may start in the home office in Reston, Houston or Cheyenne, Wyoming, as single status, to support preconstruction planning, ahead of project mobilization to the field when the candidate will locate to Cheyenne, Wyoming. This position is contingent upon project award.

Job Summary

The Rigging Superintendent is responsible for supervising and directing operations within the cranes & rigging discipline. Supervises and directs cranes & rigging craft professional, subordinate supervisors, and others, as assigned.

Major Responsibilities
  • Provide ES&H leadership to personnel assigned to their department. This includes preparation and implementation of safety procedures and leading Bechtel and subcontractor safety meetings.
  • Ensure that all crane and rigging operations comply with applicable Bechtel procedures, OSHA standards, federal, state, county, and local regulations, and customer and project-specific requirements.
  • Engage in the development of relevant Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
  • Manage all site cranes during operation in accordance with established processes and procedures, including safe usage, site relocation, assembly/disassembly of telescopic RT/AT and lattice boom crawler cranes, safe rigging, raising and lowering of long‑boom cranes, proper setup, and evaluation of site ground‑bearing conditions for crane pads.
  • Manage site Crane Operator Examiners (COEs) and the crane operator qualification program, including verification of operator certifications, state licenses, and medical certificates.
  • Ensure assigned personnel are properly qualified for their tasks (e.g., crane signaling), trained, competent, aware of their responsibilities, and compliant with all applicable standards, requirements, and safe work practices.
  • Inspect the site for unsafe conditions and practices and take appropriate corrective actions.
  • Coordinate safety training and enforce safe work practices in conjunction with the Environmental Safety and Health organization.
  • Review and approve subcontractor equipment and personnel mobilization and demobilization activities.
  • Plan the manpower and equipment required to execute assigned work.
  • Monitor craft professional activities to ensure compliance with project specifications and schedules.
  • Interface with Labor/Industrial Relations regarding craft recruitment and training programs.
  • Conduct employee performance reviews and identify training and development opportunities for crane and rigging personnel.
Additional Responsibilities
  • Review craft time records using established automated systems.
  • Prepare reports and forecasts, including construction progress summaries, craft workforce forecasts, and expenditure forecasts.
  • Implement applicable corporate and project policies, procedures, and instructions within assigned areas of responsibility.
  • Prepare material requisitions for tools and consumables and coordinate procurement activities to obtain required materials.
  • Manage rigging equipment and hardware, including forecasting, inventory control, and rigging loft operations.
  • Review weekly scheduled work plans with discipline superintendents to ensure adequate rigging resources and qualifications are available to support planned work.
  • Identify and elevate scheduling concerns and constraints to the construction management team.
  • Supervise and coordinate daily rigging construction activities with direct‑hire personnel and subcontractor representatives.
  • Ensure the safe execution of rigging activities in accordance with applicable SWPPs and legislative codes and standards.
  • Coordinate and ensure the availability of cranes, SPMTs, heavy haul equipment, and rigging hardware required to execute lifting and transportation activities.
  • Provide direction to Rigging/Heavy Haul General Foremen and Foremen to support project rigging and heavy haul initiatives.
  • Ensure rigging team members assigned to each task possess the necessary skills and qualifications to execute work safely and effectively.
Education and Experience Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, Construction Management or other relevant technical disciplines from an accredited university as well as a minimum of 5‑8 years of relevant work experience, or 9‑12 years relevant experience in the absence of a degree.
Basic Qualifications
  • Heavy industrial direct hire construction experience commensurate with the type of work to be undertaken.
  • Experience in oil, gas, refinery, petrochemical, minerals processing or power generating station construction is preferred.
  • Computer literate in word processing, spreadsheets, and database applications.
  • Working knowledge of applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Excellent communication and problem‑solving ability.
  • Ability to read and interpret crane manufacturer’s operator’s manual and load charts.
  • Experienced in safe use and inspection of rigging equipment and hardware.
  • Ability to develop 3‑week look‑ahead schedule.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified rigger/signal person. NCCCO, NCCCER or equivalent.
  • Certified crane operator, NCCCO, NCCER or equivalent.
  • Qualified OSHA crane inspector.
  • Qualified crane A/D Director.
Additional Information

Work includes field inspections and the physical ability to conduct field inspections which require the following activities: extensive walking in and around a construction site, climbing ladders, climbing scaffolding, working on elevated platforms, working on uneven surfaces and working in small or confined spaces. Some lifting may be required. Must have the ability to walk into and out of the project (enter/egress). Must be able to use appropriate standard issued Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required for each assigned task (i.e. harness, life vest, lift buckets, etc.).
