Job summary

Chico State Enterprises is seeking a Land Steward II to support ecological restoration at the Big Chico Creek Ecological Reserve (BCCER) and surrounding community. The role involves field leadership, data collection, and collaboration with project managers in a part-time, hourly capacity.

Responsibilities include training field crews, supervising tasks, safety leadership, and routine data entry, monitoring, and maintenance tasks across diverse outdoor settings.

Qualifications

• Experience performing duties similar to those described above.
• An understanding of the conservation of natural and open-space resources.
• Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of constituents, including volunteers, student staff and interns, visitors to the BCCER, faculty, staff, and partner organizations.
• Knowledge of native and non-native plant species.
• Familiarity with a variety of hand tools including chainsaws, brush cutters, and small equipment.
• Experience supervising others.
• Ability to manage time and complete tasks independently.

Responsibilities

• Under the supervision of the crew supervisor, the land steward II will conduct ecological restoration work, provide leadership in the field, and complete surveying and monitoring work as assigned.
• Assist in developing and implementing training for the field crew.
• Assist in supervising the crew and be responsible for project outcomes and safety.
• Serve as the safety/tracking lead for the crew to ensure the safe completion of projects through tracking and reporting.
• Complete data collection in the field independently.
• Perform data input and analysis.
• Monitor fieldwork activities of BCCER field crews and contract teams/partners.
• Carry out vegetation management on the BCCER, in surrounding community, and in ecologically sensitive areas using a variety of hand and power tools.
• Perform fieldwork, including invasive plant eradication, fuels reduction, fence repair, road maintenance, and trail maintenance, using a variety of hand and power tools and equipment.
• Assist with the management and maintenance of the shared workspace (shop), equipment, and tools.
• Assist with prescribed fire activities (pile burns, broadcast burns, etc.).
• Assist with facilities maintenance and minor property repairs.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
