Job summary

North American Substation Services (NASS) is seeking a Field Service Technician I in the United States to support the field team with the assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair of power transformers and high‑voltage substation equipment. Qualifications

  • CDL or ability to obtain one.
  • NCCCO crane certification or experience with rigging and lifting operations.
  • Foundational mechanical aptitude and understanding of safe work practices.
  • Familiarity with transformer/substation hazards (LOTO, grounding, arc-flash).
  • Ability to read electrical diagrams, onelines, and basic metering devices.
  • Interest in learning transformer assembly, oil processing support, gasket/bushing work, and inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training, and job site briefings.
  • Identify and report potential safety hazards.
  • Assist with assembly, installation, and setup of power transformers and substation equipment.
  • Learn bolting, wiring, torquing, and fastening techniques.
  • Safely handle tools, materials, and field equipment.
  • Support senior technicians with basic troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair.
  • Learn to recognize and help replace bushings, gaskets, and basic hardware.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to ensure efficient field operations.

Overview

Field Service Technician I

North American Substation Services (NASS) is a national leader in transformer services and high‑voltage substation installation, maintenance, testing, and repair. With more than 20 years of experience, we deliver comprehensive, one‑stop solutions for utilities, industrial operations, and critical infrastructure across the United States. Our teams support the full lifecycle of substation and transformer assets, including installation, maintenance, major repairs, and diagnostic testing.

Core services include transformer assembly, oil processing, regasketand life‑extension work, substation apparatus testing, and high‑voltage equipment maintenance to ensure safe, reliable system performance. We work on a wide range of substation equipment—power transformers, breakers, switches, arresters, and control cabinets—and perform essential diagnostics such as TTR, winding resistance, insulation resistance, power‑factor testing, and oil analysis through our dedicated in‑house laboratory. With a nationwide fleet of mobile oil‑processing units, we provide rapid on‑site support backed by strong technical expertise, a commitment to safety, and disciplined field execution to keep critical power systems operating reliably and efficiently.

Pay

The hourly rate for this position is between $25-32 per hour. Factors which may affect starting pay within this range may include geography/market, skills, education, experience, and other qualifications of the successful candidate.

Position Overview

The Field Service Technician I supports the field team with the assembly, installation, maintenance, and repair of power transformers and high voltage substation equipment. This entry‑level role focuses on safe work practices while assisting experienced technicians with transformer assembly, oil processing support, and basic mechanical and electrical field duties.

Responsibilities
  • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and PPE requirements.
  • Participate in safety meetings, training sessions, and job site briefings.
  • Identify, report, and help mitigate potential safety hazards.
  • Assist with assembly, installation, and setup of power transformers, including alignment and mechanical connections.
  • Learn and apply correct bolting, wiring, torquing, and fastening techniques.
  • Safely handle, move, and transport tools, materials, and field equipment.
  • Support senior technicians with basic troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of transformer and substation apparatus.
  • Learn to recognize and help replace components such as bushings, gaskets, and basic hardware.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors and team members to ensure accurate and efficient field operations.
Qualifications

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
  • Outdoor field role with exposure to weather, energized equipment zones, and industrial environments
  • Travel by vehicle and air; overnight stays required
