Job summary

GCI Communication Corp. is seeking a Field Service Technician I to install and service telecommunications equipment for residential and business customers. This role requires a high school diploma and a minimum of six months in a technical role, along with a valid driver's license.

Field Service Technician I - GCI

$2,500 Hiring Bonus!

Represent GCI's service philosophy by assisting customers who have purchased and are using company products and services, and by helping them upgrade or expand their services. Provide telecommunications installation and servicing of Video, high‑speed Data, and Voice product lines within customer residences and business properties in an efficient and professional manner.

Responsibilities
  • Install, service, and troubleshoot telecommunications equipment including analog or digital systems for video, voice, and data services from the tap or demark location to the customer’s premises.
  • Perform routine maintenance and operations on radio frequency, analog, microwave, fiber optic, and AC/DC components.
  • Refer problems between the demark and headend or distribution center to network technicians.
  • Perform disconnects, reconnects, and relocate services as instructed; repair or replace worn components and faulty connections.
  • Utilize test equipment to measure and adjust signal strength to ensure optimal reception.
  • Perform preventative or corrective maintenance such as underground cable locates, outage response, rewiring, or upgrading cabling and equipment, impairment mitigation, system drive‑off, and repairs.
  • Communicate with customers on‑site and present additional service offerings.
  • Support senior staff technicians and mentor junior technicians with install, test, and repair of custom service orders.
  • Maintain basic vehicle upkeep, truck stock, and comply with company safe‑driving and other applicable policies.
  • Explain non‑technical procedures, equipment operation, answer customer questions, and promote sales of additional services.
  • Evaluate field conditions, perform tests, and measure to determine signal quality.
  • Ensure proper cabling from the tap or demark location to the customer premise equipment.
  • Communicate with Dispatch or SMC to update and complete service orders or trouble tickets.
  • Assist with new installations and trouble tickets in a timely manner.
  • Verify accuracy of written work order, confirm discrepancies, collect payments and customer signatures, and ensure all documentation is updated promptly.
  • Escalate issues as needed to the appropriate department or management team.
  • Work with senior technicians and respond to outages or other duties as required.
Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of six (6) months in a technical role or related background.
  • Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance, a satisfactory driving record, and a completed Defensive Driving course.
  • Ability to pass a pre‑employment or return‑to‑work physical and fitness‑for‑duty examination, if required.
  • Knowledge of telephone/RF standards, safety codes, and terminology related to service orders and repair tickets (desired).
  • Basic knowledge of issued monitoring and test equipment, company products, services, and features for video, voice, and data services.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks in cold weather, on poles up to 40 ft, in trenches up to 10 ft deep, and around high‑power electrical conductors and gas lines.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate degree in electronics, telecommunications, or a related field.
  • Telecommunications experience.
  • Relevant telecom industry or job‑specific certifications.
  • Experience living and working in an arctic environment (six months minimum).
Driving and Physical Requirements
  • Must drive a company‑owned vehicle, company‑provided vehicle, or personal vehicle on behalf of the company.
  • Must adhere to safe‑driving policies and maintain vehicle maintenance.
  • Ability to cope with adverse weather and remote arctic conditions.
  • Capability to work at heights up to 40 ft on poles, ladders, and buckets; perform work below overhead construction and in trenches to 10 ft deep.
  • Capacity to lift and maneuver equipment and supplies up to 70 lb occasionally, and up to 50 lb regularly.
  • High degree of balance, coordination, strength, and dexterity to operate hand tools and equipment.
  • Strong visual and auditory acuity to function in noisy, windy, or snowy environments.
  • Availability to work additional time on weekends, holidays, and other shifts when required, including on‑call duties.
  • Must work well in a team environment and with a diverse group of people and customers.
Travel & Regulatory Requirements
  • Position requires travel across the state and may involve access to regulated facilities requiring compliant identification.
  • Employees must obtain and maintain appropriate identification and, when required, successfully participate in background checks within ninety (90) days of hire.
