Description

SUMMARY

The Field Service Technician provides support and consultation to customers and is critical in completing various tasks including, but not limited to, assembly, installation, commissioning, and testing of industrial systems. The Field Service Technician will install and repair a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment including control systems, panels, timers, counters, PLCs, variable frequency drives, monitors, power supplies, and more. The Field Service Technician will perform on-site evaluation and maintenance on equipment, test unit function, and make final adjustments on installation and repairs. The Field Service Technician may in some instances need to complete component level electronic repair for customers.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Field Service Responsibilities

  • Assembly, installation, commissioning, and testing of industrial control systems.
  • Accurately and independently perform repairs, panel modifications, commissioning, and other tasks on-site at customer facilities.
  • Programs and repairs variable frequency drives (VFDs).
  • Performs preventative maintenance, troubleshoots, and repairs various other electronic equipment on customer sites. Observe equipment in operation to determine root cause of failure.
  • Repair and/or replace defective parts on-site to reduce downtime of customer equipment.
  • Performs routine processes with and within industrial control systems to troubleshoot and analyze complex equipment, perform equipment maintenance, and resolve equipment failures.
  • Complies with customer contractor codes of conduct, housekeeping standards, and safety procedures.
  • Documents field service work completed in company systems.
  • Communicates with multiple departments regarding the status of field service jobs, including Purchasing, Engineering, Sales, Customer Service, and Logistics.
  • Maintains a neat, orderly and clean field service vehicle.
  • Cross trains in other areas.
  • Performs other duties as directed by leadership.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses equipment failure to determine component level needs for repair and/or replacement.
  • Uses diagnostic tools and equipment, such as oscilloscopes, multimeters and other specialized equipment.
  • Follows engineering instructions, technical manuals, customer specifications and/or other documented work instructions, including schematics or drawings.
  • Updates progress notes in the designated system to document the steps taken to repair the unit.
  • Starts up and shuts down unit in compliance with company and OSHA safety procedures for machine activation and shutdown.
  • Maintains company and/or customer required performance documentation and maintenance records for specified unit/customer.
  • Communicates with multiple departments regarding the status of repairs, including Purchasing, Engineering, Sales, Customer Service, Logistics, and IT.
  • Maintains a neat, orderly and clean workstation.
  • Cross trains in other areas.
  • Performs other duties as directed by leadership.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Requires a two-year degree in electronics or related technical discipline or equivalent related work experience or combination of training, education and experience.
  • Required to maintain a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Previous experience with test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, Huntron, Pinpoint, IC programmers or test fixtures.
  • Previous experience in a field service-related role preferred.
  • UL 508A training preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of electrical/electronic and mechanical principles.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply electronic principles including analog, digital and microprocessor circuit concepts and related components.
  • Ability to troubleshoot electronic devices and individual components without schematics or documented test procedures.
  • Ability to read and understand component data sheets, diagrams and schematics.
  • Ability to cross reference electronic components.
  • Ability to follow oral and written policies, procedures and instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and maintain a high level of productivity while achieving quality workmanship to achieve established metrics.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with multiple levels and cross functionally.

  • Frequent bending, stooping, and walking throughout customer facilities.
  • Frequent standing at a workstation to perform diagnostic and repair tasks.
  • Occasionally required to lift 35-50 pounds without assistance to waist or shoulder height in order to move units from a cart to workstation and from workstation to cart.
  • Requires fine motor skills due to the small size of components and precision work performed.
  • Frequent use of hand tools, including screwdrivers, pliers, wrenches, etc.
  • Occasional computer and mobile technology work to include cell phones and tablets.
  • Consistent attendance with occasional off-shift support required.
  • Frequent travel equivalent to more than 50% of the time. When not travelling, will work at a workstation in a well-lit, climate controlled environment.
