Job summary

American Water is seeking a Field Service Representative in Chattanooga, TN. The role involves working with customers and the national call center to determine appropriate service responses and to ensure reliable operation of the distribution system.

Qualifications

  • Specific vocational preparation includes an occupationally-significant combination of vocational education, apprentice training, in-plant training, on-the-job training, or essential experience.

Responsibilities

  • Interact with customers to determine appropriate response and support.
  • Install or remove meters following written or oral instructions.
  • Inspect meters, valves, hydrants, and pipes to detect leaks or malfunctions.
  • Drive company vehicle and assist with related field tasks as required.
  • Follow safety guidelines and perform duties in a field environment.

This position is a union position with Tennessee American Water and the starting pay rate is $29.14 per hour.


This position may be eligible for annual incentive pay and contracted increases as determined by the collective bargaining agreement, and you will have the opportunity for continued salary growth. Primary Role

Working independently without direct supervision, talks directly with customers and national call center to determine appropriate response. Performs a variety of tasks to assist in the efficient and reliable operation, maintenance, protection, and appearance of all pipelines, services, hydrants, valves, meters, meter settings, and other appurtenances within the distribution system. Initiates or discontinues services to the customer's home or establishment including installation or removal of meters, following written or oral instruction.


Key Accountabilities

  • Constantly performs work assigned by supervisor; collects, compiles, and records work data.
  • Constantly locates appropriate valves at customer's home or establishment and turns valves to permit flow or discontinuance of water, using various tools.
  • Frequently records meter readings. Frequently investigates customer complaints and completes service orders, as required.
  • Frequently inspects meters, valves, hydrants, and pipes to detect defects such as leaks or malfunctioning meters.
  • Constantly tightens pipe connections, clamps, and couplings to prevent leaks, using wrenches and various hand tools.
  • Frequently communicates with customers, supervisory personnel, company dispatcher, or national call center, as required.
  • Frequently disconnects and connects water meter to outlet and inlet cowlings, using assorted hand tools.
  • Constantly uses miscellaneous equipment including, but not limited to, pry bars, shovels, picks, hand tools, power tools, or equipment and valve keys.
  • Frequently backfills, tamps, and installs temporary paving, using assorted hand tools, power tools, or equipment.
  • Frequently ensures job site is secure prior to leaving.
  • Frequently determines appropriate material, pipe sections, valves, and fittings needed to perform assigned work on a frequent basis.
  • Drives company vehicle, as required. Occasionally assists with installation or removal of shoring systems, as required.
  • Constantly follows established safety guidelines and procedures.
  • Occasionally performs the duties of all classifications in operations with the exception of classifications in Production and Water Quality departments and Heavy Equipment Operator in Distribution.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Experience/Education

Work Enviornment

All work is outside work involving contact with water or other liquids. Atmospheric condition with moisture content sufficiently high to cause marked bodily discomfort. Exposure to ambient temperature extremes both hot and cold. Works near gasoline, oil, sewer, or substances in the soil. Potential exposure to poison ivy, oak, sumac, insects, etc. Subject to potential hazards such as driving/driving in darkness, working in traffic, and working with and around excavation equipment and compressed air.
