Job Purpose

As a Field Service Mechanic C, you are an entry-level technician who will familiarize yourself with product knowledge and standards of quality in the field. Field Service Mechanic C's will learn the standard operating procedures at the branch, region, and national level to grow their career to higher-level mechanic roles. The primary focus of a Herc Rentals Field Service Mechanic C is to utilize their mechanical training to contribute to fleet maintenance operations at customer job sites, ensuring Herc Rentals equipment remains on the rental 'ready line'. This goal is achieved safely and professionally through an effective preventative and corrective maintenance program, executed from a service truck under the guidance of senior field mechanics.

What you will do...

Preventative Maintenance (Field)

• Follow PM schedules for Herc-owned fleet at active job sites.
• Perform oil changes, filter replacements, and lubrication onsite.
• Replace oil/fuel filters per OEM recommendations; monitor oil condition and replace as needed.
• Manage coolant levels and hose quality; drain water separators to prevent moisture damage.
• Flush cooling systems periodically to prevent corrosion/overheating.
• Inspect/replace air filters; identify proper fluids and filters per OEM recommendation.
• Perform DPF/DEF system maintenance.
• Conduct frequent visual inspections of engines, belts, and hoses.
• Inspect for oil leaks around seals/gaskets and confirm proper fuel type.

Equipment Operations & Inspections (Field)

• Operate/test equipment onsite to confirm quality and efficiency standards.
• Conduct regular visual/operational inspections at job sites.
• Monitor/change hydraulic fluid, engine oil, and fuel filters.
• Grease moving parts (arms, joints, pivot points).
• Check tire pressure, tread, and wheels for damage.
• Inspect hoses, pumps, valves, and cylinders for leaks.
• Check platform/ground controls, safety alarms, and emergency stop buttons.
• Inspect batteries for charging; clean terminals and maintain water levels.
• Perform oil changes, lubrication, tire/hose/battery replacements from the service truck.
• Determine base warranty eligibility for engines onsite.
• Collaborate with senior mechanics and supervisor to ensure safety/operational standards are met.

Electrical & Safety Tasks (Field)

• Inspect/clean battery terminals; test voltage and load capacity.
• Verify proper battery mounting and secure harness routing.
• Inspect connectors/plugs for damage or loose wires.
• Test headlights, tail lights, brake lights, back-up alarm, and indicators.
• Inspect fuse box; test power supply and replace blown fuses.
• Check alternator belt tension/output; test charging system circuits.
• Inspect/test sensors and control modules.
• Read electrical schematics and meters; use a multimeter.
• Perform lockout/tagout; identify proper PPE for field tasks.
• Diagnose small tools and light rental equipment with senior mechanic assistance.

Work Orders & Reporting (Field)

• Enter work orders and order parts via fleet management system from the field.
• Produce detailed service reports and repair logs per visit.
• Assist in reconditioning/replacing heavy equipment parts onsite.
• Learn warranty coverage terms during field visits.
• Keep service truck and inventory clean and organized.
• Follow field procedures, protocols, and safety requirements; other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or equivalent.
• Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; ability to operate a fully equipped service truck and be able to obtain a FMCSA regulated Driver Qualification File (DQF)
• Ownership of sufficient selection of hand and air/electric tools to complete most repairs and services.
• Ability to drive/operate multiple types of vehicles and equipment.
• Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs.
• Some knowledge in electrical and hydraulic systems; willingness to learn how to read schematics.
• Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and job site environments.

Skills

• Ability to operate and test equipment such as boom lifts, forklifts, compressors, portable and stationary generators, hydraulics, pumps, and assorted tools and equipment.
• Computer skills to support entering information into systems from the field.
• Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with customers, job site supervisors, and team members.
• Interpersonal skills and teamwork in a field environment.
• Listening skills and dependability on active job sites.
• Attention to detail and strong situational awareness.
• Solid written and verbal communication skills; ability to perform basic computer operations such as opening and closing work orders from the field.

• Ability to perform repetitive tasks, including stretching, turning, twisting, and reaching overhead

Pay Range:$31.00 to $34.00 per hour
