Job summary

SIXGEN is seeking a Network Field Service Engineer to install, configure, and maintain networking and communications equipment at government sites. This role requires on-site work with 50% travel, including hands-on electrical and general contracting tasks to complete field installations.

Candidates should have strong Ethernet and fiber knowledge, be comfortable with sensitive environments, and be willing to travel to customer locations to ensure system readiness and connectivity.

Qualifications

• US Citizen with TS SCI eligibility and ability to pass CI polygraph
• GED and 10+ years of experience OR 7+ years with an Associate’s degree and related field
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field with 4+ years of experience OR
• Master’s degree with 2+ years of experience in a relevant technical field

Responsibilities

• Travel to government sites to install, configure, test, and troubleshoot networking equipment
• Install and terminate Ethernet and fiber cabling, racks, switches, routers, and related network gear
• Perform equipment mounting, enclosure setup, cable routing, grounding, and basic electrical work as needed
• Support site modifications, including drywall work, conduit routing, and enclosure fabrication
• Verify connectivity and performance using test equipment and standard network diagnostics
• Read site drawings, diagrams, and installation plans to ensure proper installation

Description:

We are seeking a Field Service IT Engineer to support the installation, configuration, and maintenance of networking and communications equipment at government customer sites. This role requires a hands‑on technical professional who is comfortable traveling to customer locations, working in highly sensitive operational environments, and performing both IT/networking tasks and light general contracting work required to complete field installations.

Responsibilities:

• Travel to government customer sites to install, configure, test, and troubleshoot networking and communications equipment.
• Install and terminate Ethernet and fiber optic cabling, including patch panels, switches, routers, media converters, transceivers, and related network infrastructure.
• Perform physical installation tasks including equipment mounting, rack and enclosure setup, cable routing, labeling, grounding, and securing hardware.
• Conduct light general contracting work as needed to support installations, including basic electrical work, drywall modification or repair, conduit placement, enclosure creation, and wall or ceiling penetrations.
• Build, modify, or install protective enclosures, cabinets, racks, and mounting solutions for network and communications equipment.
• Verify connectivity and performance of Ethernet and fiber communication links using appropriate test equipment and troubleshooting methods.
• Support network equipment configuration, including IP addressing, VLANs, routing basics, switchport configuration, and device validation.
• Read and interpret site drawings, network diagrams, wiring diagrams, installation plans, and technical documentation.

Experience:

• Experience as a Field Service Engineer, Network Technician, Low Voltage Technician, Systems Installer, IT Infrastructure Technician, or similar hands‑on technical role.
• Strong knowledge of Ethernet networking, including copper cabling, RJ45 termination, patch panels, switches, routers, IP addressing, VLANs, and basic network troubleshooting.
• Working knowledge of fiber optic communications, including single-mode and multi-mode fiber, LC/SC connectors, SFP/SFP+ modules, fiber patching, light levels, and fiber testing concepts.
• Experience installing and configuring networking equipment such as switches, routers, firewalls, wireless access points, media converters, and rack‑mounted devices.
• General contracting experience, including basic electrical work, drywall work, equipment mounting, conduit routing, enclosure fabrication or installation, and site modification.
• Ability to use hand tools, power tools, cable testers, fiber testers, tone generators, multimeters, labelers, and other field installation equipment.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

You’ll lead SIXGEN's efforts to

• Identify access points and plans to support network collection based on requirements.
• Develop, plan, and execute collection efforts.
• Stay on the leading edge of new collection technologies and methods.

You’ll work closely with end-users to identify requirements, conceptualize capabilities, and drive collection efforts.

Preferred skills include:

• Network design
• General tradesman skills (drywall, electrical, HVAC, plumbing)
• Understanding of construction sites and construction projects

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Associate's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Cyber Operations, Computer Networks, Cybersecurity, Information Security, and Information Assurance from an accredited university/college, and/or a Trade Certification/License. AND 7+ years of experience OR
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Cyber Operations, Computer Networks, Cybersecurity, Information Security, and Information Assurance from an accredited university/college AND 4+ years of experience OR
• Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Cyber Operations, Computer Networks, Cybersecurity, Information Security, and Information Assurance from an accredited university/college AND 2+ years of experience

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

Salary range: $136,000 to $184,320 with ability for overtime

The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only. Actual salary offer may vary based on (but not limited to) work experience, education and/or training, critical skills, and/or business considerations. The final salary offer will be determined after a thorough review of the candidate's background and alignment with the role.
