Job summary

Forgent Power Solutions, Inc. seeks a Field Service Apprentice, the entry-level track in our field service technician career path.

You will gain hands-on training under the supervision of senior technicians and Field Engineers to learn maintenance, inspection, and testing on electrical equipment. You will complete training modules and OEM certifications on schedule, assist with on-site tasks, document readings, and uphold safety standards including NFPA 70E and OSHA guidelines.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Strong willingness to learn the electrical field service trade.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to use common hand tools.
  • Ability to read and follow written procedures and safety instructions.
  • Must be at least 18 years old and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Reliable transportation to the home shop.

Responsibilities

  • Learn maintenance, inspection, and testing procedures on low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment with senior technicians.
  • Observe and assist with switchgear, breaker, ATS, generator, transformer, and PDU service activities.
  • Complete training modules and certifications on schedule.
  • Report findings and document observations accurately.
  • Maintain tool, test equipment, and material accountability.
  • Support on-site safety, LOTO, and NFPA 70E compliance.
  • Communicate professionally with team and customer personnel.
  • Arrive on time in proper uniform and PPE.

Description
The Field Service Apprentice is the entry-level position on the field service technician track. This role learns the fundamentals of electrical field service through hands-on training under direct supervision of senior technicians and Field Engineers. The apprentice supports basic maintenance, inspection, and testing tasks while building the technical knowledge, safety habits, and professional practices needed to advance to FST2. Success in this role is measured by safety compliance, training completion, attention to detail, and demonstrated readiness to take on independent task ownership.

Core Responsibilities
  • Learning & On-the-Job Training
    Work alongside senior technicians and Field Engineers to learn maintenance, inspection, and testing procedures on low- and medium-voltage electrical equipment.
  • Observe and assist with switchgear, breaker, ATS, generator, transformer, and PDU service activities.
  • Complete assigned training modules, OEM training, and certifications on schedule.
  • Ask questions, take notes, and apply feedback from mentors to build technical skill.
  • Field Support Tasks
    Perform basic visual inspections under direct supervision and report findings.
  • Assist with cleaning, lubrication, and basic mechanical checks on field equipment.
  • Stage tools, test equipment, and parts at the work site; help with setup and teardown.
  • Assist with measurements such as voltage, continuity, and basic insulation resistance under direct supervision.
  • Support documentation by recording observations, readings, and equipment data on test sheets.
  • Safety, Isolation & Grounding
    Participate in lockout/tagout (LOTO), grounding activities, and verification of zero-energy states under direct supervision.
  • Participate in Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and on-site safety briefings.
  • Wear required PPE at all times and follow all NFPA 70E, OSHA, and customer site safety requirements.
  • Immediately report unsafe conditions, near misses, or equipment concerns to the senior technician on site.
  • Tools, Materials & Vehicle Care
    Maintain accountability for assigned tools, test equipment, and materials.
  • Help load, unload, and organize service vehicles; ensure tools are clean and serviceable.
  • Track and report tool calibration, damage, or replacement needs.
  • Professional Practices
    Communicate professionally with team members, supervisors, and customer personnel.
  • Arrive on time, in proper uniform and PPE, and prepared for the day's work.
  • Complete time entries, expense reports, and basic field documentation accurately.
  • Represent the company positively at customer sites at all times.
  • Required Qualifications
    High school diploma or GED required.

  • Basic mechanical aptitude and ability to use common hand tools.
  • Ability to read and follow written procedures, safety instructions, and basic technical documentation.
  • Ability to take direction, accept feedback, and work as part of a crew.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Valid driver's license required and must be maintained throughout employment; reliable transportation to the home shop.
  • Preferred Qualifications
    Active enrollment in or completion of a trade school, electrical program, or registered apprenticeship.
  • Military electrical, electronics, or maintenance training (e.g., Navy electrician, Army prime power, Air Force electrical systems).
  • Prior experience in industrial maintenance, construction, automotive, or other hands-on trade roles.
  • OSHA 10 certification.
  • Basic familiarity with multimeters, hand tools, or shop equipment.
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    Coachability — open to instruction, willing to ask questions, and able to apply feedback.
  • Reliability and punctuality; field service work depends on showing up ready every day.
  • Attention to detail in tool care, documentation, and following written procedures.
  • Comfort working as part of a small crew in unfamiliar environments.
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills.
  • Comfort with basic computer use and willingness to learn mobile/field reporting tools.
  • Tools & Technology
    Hand tools, basic power tools, and standard shop equipment.
  • Introductory exposure to multimeters, clamp meters, insulation resistance testers (meggers), and torque wrenches.
  • Mobile field service applications, time tracking systems, and basic Microsoft Office tools.
  • Working Conditions & Travel
    Primarily field-based at customer facilities including industrial plants, utilities, data centers, commercial facilities, and substations; some shop-based work and training as well.
  • Travel typically 25–50%, primarily as part of a senior technician's crew; may include occasional nights, weekends, or overnight stays.
  • Work may be performed in confined spaces, on elevated platforms, in hot/cold environments, and around energized equipment per safety rules.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE including arc-rated clothing, hard hat, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and fall protection as needed.
  • Physical Requirements
    Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and assist with moving heavier equipment with team members.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, bend, climb ladders/stairs, and work at heights for extended periods.
  • Ability to differentiate conductor colors and indicator states and read instruments and displays.
  • Ability to perform sustained physical work outdoors and in industrial environments.
