Job summary

Inyo County is seeking a field-oriented research assistant to support vegetation, hydrology, soil, and ecological surveys. You will collect data in Owens Valley, interpret aerial imagery and GIS layers, and help prepare technical reports while coordinating activities with seasonal staff.

The role requires the ability to work outdoors year-round, lift up to 30 pounds, and maintain safety standards; driving and background checks are part of the process.

Qualifications

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in biology, botany, ecology, soil science, environmental science, or related field.
• Experience as a research assistant, field technician, or similar position.
• Ability to work in Owens Valley environment year-round.

Responsibilities

• Assist in research and monitoring activities related to vegetation, soil water, hydrology, and biologic surveys.
• Collect and organize field and laboratory data; access remote areas using 4-wheel drive vehicles; interpret aerial photography, maps and GIS layers.
• Manage and interpret data using basic analytical techniques; assist in preparing technical reports.
• Assist with training seasonal/temporary field assistants and coordinate activities with these staff.
• Operate and maintain field and laboratory equipment; adhere to safety instructions.
