Job summary

SEIU Local 1021 in Oakland is seeking a Field Representative for the Education Team. Under the Area Director, you will develop worksite leadership, recruit members, handle grievances, and support campaigns related to bargaining and legislation.

You will prepare plans, calendars, and records, and work evenings and weekends as needed. The role requires strong communication, contract interpretation, and dedication to advancing public services and union rights.

Qualifications

• Experience in union organizing and representation.
• Experience in negotiating contracts is highly desirable, but not required.
• Must have experience in county and governmental areas.
• Related experience will be given consideration as will steward and rank-and-file experience.
• Local 1021 seeks to maintain a staff which is representative of a wide variety of backgrounds to reflect members’ interests.

Responsibilities

• Develop worksite leadership structures and recruit new members.
• Handle grievances, arbitrations, and disciplinary appeals.
• Support members in exercising political power and organize campaigns.
• Prepare work plans, calendars, files, and reports.
• Maintain regular communication with workers through visits, flyers, newsletters, and meetings.
• Provide advocacy and assist with negotiations and hearings on behalf of union members.
