Field Mechanic (Multiple Locations)

Overview
Responsible for leading the operations and appearance of Wanzek Construction's equipment at the jobsite level. This position is supervised directly by project personnel and works with the Shop Manager to plan and schedule work or seek advice or assistance.
Responsibilities
- Fleet maintenance management
- Perform maintenance and preventative maintenance on all equipment; troubleshoot and determine if repairs will be done in the field, in Wanzek\'s shop, at a dealership, or by other means
- Travel to jobsites for repairs, inspections, and to review field maintenance for proper execution; review maintenance reports
- Onsite field repairs/troubleshooting
- Update the equipment locator list and equipment/tool inventory
- Develop and maintain an equipment maintenance tracking database
- Maintain proper record keeping and update tool inventory
- Operate equipment to diagnose problems and inspect equipment for defects
- Ensure all equipment has an equipment ID (logo, unit numbers, digital photos)
- Verify USDOT annual inspections for trucks and keep on file
- Ensure equipment safety (backup alarms, lights, seat belts, fire extinguishers, rigging, etc.)
- Demonstrate expertise in basic and complex machines, including crane safety; investigate to ensure logs and two-blocks are correct
- Travel occasionally to jobsites for repairs and to review field maintenance and reports
- Review maintenance records with operators and superintendents to promote self-sufficiency
- Perform work as outlined on repair orders with efficiency and accuracy per dealership and factory standards
- Diagnose causes of malfunctions and perform repairs
- Communicate effectively to obtain needed parts
- Assess vehicles to determine if further safety or service work is required or recommended
- Document all work performed and recommended on repair orders
- Road test vehicles when required
- Identify machinery defects or malfunctions and complete repairs
- Keep shop area neat and clean
- Maintain and account for all shop tools and manuals, returning them to the proper place in the same condition
- Understand and comply with federal, state, and local regulations (e.g., hazardous waste disposal, OSHA Right-to-Know)
- Operate tools and equipment safely and report safety issues to management
Qualifications
Education and Work Experience Requirements:
- One-year certificate from college or technical school in Diesel or Automotive Technology and two or more years relevant experience
- One or more of the following certifications: Electrical diagnostics and repair, A/C system diagnostics and repair, Welding Certification, OEM certification (JD Tech, CAT Tech, Case IH Tech, Komatsu Tech, Ford, Kenworth, Liebherr)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Take reasonable care of your own and others\' health and safety and of those affected by this role, supporting Wanzek\'s Zero Injury principles
- Qualified to drive a 1-ton rig on site and between projects
- Ability to diagnose complex problems in mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems
- Ability to supervise and coordinate the work of a 3rd party mechanic
- Ability to track and maintain records of completed work and update open work orders
- Minimum level of rework; high level of efficiency (80% or higher)
- Ability to work independently and willingness to go above and beyond
