We partner with a wide variety of clients to provide mass grading, underground wet and dry utilities, excavation, and backfill services for residential and industrial construction projects in Iowa and Eastern Nebraska.

Position Description:

The Field Heavy Equipment Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction equipment and tractor-trailers at active job sites. This role performs preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on diesel engines, hydraulic, electrical, and drivetrain systems to ensure safe and reliable operation. The mechanic maintains accurate service records, communicates regularly with the Maintenance Supervisor to prioritize repairs, and ensures compliance with safety and DOT requirements. This position requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently in demanding outdoor environments while traveling to multiple job sites.

Applicants should expect to work primarily in Central Iowa with additional trips across Iowa and Eastern Nebraska. Most travel is day trips with occasional overnights (<20%).

Field Mechanics start work at 6:30am Monday through Friday and can expect 50-60 hours per week. Weekend overtime required as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Travel to construction sites to diagnose, repair, and maintain a variety of heavy construction equipment (e.g., bulldozers, scrapers, excavators, and loaders) and tractor-trailers.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and services on diesel engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, transmissions, and brakes.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical and electrical failures using diagnostic tools and technical manuals. Escalate issues to manufacturer assistance hotline as necessary.
  • Complete work orders and maintenance records accurately and in a timely manner. Report hours worked on each piece of equipment accurately.
  • Operate and test repaired equipment to verify functionality and ensure quality of repairs.
  • Maintain communication with Field Maintenance Supervisor to coordinate scheduling and repair priorities.
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Maintain service truck inventory and ensure all tools, equipment, and parts are in good working condition. Conduct thorough pre- and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicle safety and compliance with DOT regulations.
  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Must be at least 21 years old.
  • Associate’s degree in Diesel Technology or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of mechanic experience with heavy equipment may supplement a degree.
  • Experience with CAT, CASE, Peterbilt, and/or Mack equipment preferred.
  • CDL Class B license and a clean driving record required.
  • Able to demonstrate a high level of attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage time effectively, follow direction, and work as part of a team.
  • Must own a set of basic mechanic tools.
  • Ability to travel outside of Central Iowa and willingness to work overtime required.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to independently lift/carry and push/pull up to 50 lb.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend/squat, kneel, and twist on a frequent basis. Occasionally crawl.
  • Ability to perform overhead work, including reaching, lifting, and positioning tools or parts above shoulder height.
  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
  • Ability to climb ladders/stairs and maintain balance while performing work.
  • Ability to work outdoors 100% of the time, including in hot, cold, and wet conditions.
  • This position may require some sedentary duty.
  • Up to $41.36 per hour, based on experience. Overtime is paid after 40 hours per week.
  • 100% paid benefits, including health/dental/vision insurance premiums and pension dues, as provided by the Local 234 Operating Engineers.
