Job summary

Omaha Eppley Airfield seeks a Field Maintenance Worker to perform maintenance, repair, and labor tasks at Eppley and Millard airports. The role requires operating heavy equipment, painting, paving, and fuel/power tool use in all weather conditions.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy and off-road equipment including snowplows, dump trucks and loaders.
  • Repair asphalt, concrete, and perform painting and striping tasks.
  • Maintain machinery and perform general building repairs.
  • Perform manual labor such as trash pickup and land clearing.
  • Provide airport lighting maintenance and radio communications with FAA personnel.
  • Escort duties on air operations area and respond to emergencies.

Job description

Position Summary

This position encompasses a wide variety of maintenance and labor-intensive activities at both Eppley Airfield and Millard Airport. The individual is required to work both independently and as part of a team, with emphasis on judicial use of time, thoroughness, ability to adapt to a wide variety of work skills, and an awareness of airfield operations. While much of the work takes place outdoors during all weather conditions, some assigned tasks are indoors assisting other departments. The employee is often required to make independent decisions regarding the progress of work in completing assigned tasks.

The position requires 40 hours per week, overtime is often required to perform snow removal and other tasks.

This is a non-exempt position in the Facilities Maintenance Department. The Field Maintenance Worker reports to the Field Maintenance Supervisor.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Operate a wide variety of heavy and off-road equipment, including but not limited to snowplows, brooms and blowers, dump truck, high reach, forklift, road grader, and farm-type tractors and mowers.

  2. Operate equipment and perform labor in the repair of asphalt and concrete pavements, crack sealing, storm and sanitary sewer system maintenance, painting and striping of pavement, etc.

  3. Maintain and repair machinery and vehicles, including heavy equipment.

  4. Perform building interior and exterior painting.

  5. Perform a wide variety of manual labor tasks, including but not limited to trash pickup, land clearing, fence repair, sweeping, etc.

  6. Perform electrical repairs and maintenance of airport lighting and other equipment.

  7. Operate radio equipment and communicate with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) personnel on airfield activities.

  8. Perform air operations area safety escorting duties.

  9. Respond in emergency situations, as requested.

  10. Perform general repairs to building exteriors, including jetway/boarding bridge maintenance.

  11. Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  1. High school diploma or GED certificate with ability to read and write.

  2. Must obtain a valid Nebraska or Iowa commercial driver's license (CDL) prior to completion of qualification period.The CDL holders are required under Federal law to participate in a random drug and alcohol testing program required under federal law.

  3. Physical requirements would be lifting (up to 50 pounds or more), use of power tools/equipment, operating large snow removal and construction equipment, and possible long periods of standing or sitting.

  4. Ability to read and understand task procedures and instructional information regarding the proper operation of equipment and machinery.

  5. Inherent mechanical ability.

  6. Capable of producing desired results while effectively utilizing available resources.

  7. Ability to consistently take initiative and use sound judgement when making decisions to benefit the organization.

  8. Ability to interact professionally in all situations.

  9. Effective oral and written comminication skills.

  10. Reliable, present, and punctual in performing essential job functions.

  11. Ongoing learning and training to expand skill sets to adapt to existing and future organizational needs.

  12. Ability to obtain Non-Movement Area and Movement Area driver qualifications within the probationary/qualification period and maintain these certifications throughout employment.

  13. Must be able to understand and speak English without accent or impediment of speech that would interfere with two-way radio communications with air traffic control for those positions required to operate on the movement area.
