  • Read piping and structural blueprints and ensure tools/equipment are in working order.
  • Hoist and move materials using appropriate equipment; perform other duties as assigned.

Job description

This position is located at Dakota Gasification Company in Beulah, ND.

Responsible for performing critical and routine mechanical welding tasks to fabricate or repair plant machinery and equipment, including shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), and flux cored arc welding (FCAW) on plate or weld pipe to American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) code specifications.

  • Perform weld repairs using stick electrode or wire feed processes in carbon and stainless-steel plate and pipe material.
  • Perform maintenance tasks to repair and maintain equipment and machinery. Equipment operated includes carry deck, stinger, JLG manlift, forklifts, weld trucks, and portable welders.
  • Read and understand piping and structural steel blueprints for work to be completed.
  • Ensure all tools and equipment are in working condition.
  • Operate all types of hoisting equipment related to mechanical maintenance, and mobile equipment including man lifts, and forklifts.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of a two-year welding program or qualified apprenticeship program; or
  • A high school diploma or equivalent (GED or HSED) and 2 years of welding experience.
  • Ability to pass two welding tests – a tig root and 7018 fill using 6” carbon steel standard wall pipe in the 6-G position and a 5-P-root with 7018 fill using 6” standard carbon steel pipe in the 6-G position.
  • May be required to work rotating shifts.
  • A valid driver’s license.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS

Requires constant hand coordination/pinch, standing, and walking; frequent balancing; occasional lifting and carrying up to 35 pounds (50 pounds rarely), pushing and pulling up to 120 pounds, hand grip up to 75 pounds, sitting, bending, reaching, low level activity (crawling in confined spaces), elevated activity, climbing. Requires continuous use of tools and occasional turning of valves and use of foot controls. Approximately 50% of the incumbent’s shift is spent outdoors. Occasionally requires working at heights from 10 to 250 feet, which requires the use of safety equipment, including a harness, in accordance with ANSI Z359 standards, and in high climbing areas on grating, ladders, scaffolding, man baskets and other areas requiring use of safety equipment. Continuously exposed to noise; frequently exposed to dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, and extreme heat and cold; and occasionally exposed to vibration, poor ventilation and confined areas such as inside vessels, heaters, tanks, and trenches. Incumbents are required to wear dust masks, respirators and full-face Scott Air Paks when necessary. Requires good finger dexterity, good binocular vision, good color vision and hearing, and the ability to speak.
