Job summary

Responsibilities

• Loading and unloading materials and keeping the job site clean and ready for the next phase of work.
• Operating construction tools and equipment safely and effectively.
• Supporting skilled tradesmen and craftworkers to keep the project moving forward.
• Completing a variety of on-site tasks as directed by your supervisor.
• Assisting the superintendent in coordinating daily work activities and maintaining short-term schedules.
• Monitoring jobsite safety, quality, and progress—ensuring work aligns with plans and meets company standards.
• Supervising assigned subcontractors and ensuring team members have proper tools and materials.

Job Summary

As a Field Intern, you'll spend the summer on a Hutton job site gaining hands‑on experience, building relationships, and seeing firsthand how we show up for the communities we serve. This role is designed to complement your education and immerse you in Hutton's culture. Depending on your experience and background, you'll take on a variety of tasks alongside our field teammates. If you're looking to build connections in the construction industry while still in school, this role is for you.

Key Responsibilities

Please note, some responsibilities are contingent on knowledge and experience, such as construction software, previous projects, college coursework, etc.

Your day might include:

• Loading and unloading materials and keeping the job site clean, organized, and ready for the next phase of work.
• Operating construction tools and equipment safely and effectively.
• Supporting skilled tradesmen and craftworkers to keep the project moving forward.
• Completing a variety of on‑site tasks as directed by your supervisor.

More experienced interns may also take on:

• Assisting the superintendent in coordinating daily work activities and maintaining short‑term schedules to keep the project on track.
• Monitoring jobsite safety, quality, and progress—ensuring work aligns with plans and meets company standards.
• Supervising assigned subcontractors, ensure team members have proper tools and materials.

Requirements

Education and Experience

• Actively pursuing a 4-year degree, Construction Management or Construction Science is preferred, but not required.
• We’re looking for attitude. If you’re dependable, willing to learn, and ready to work hard, you’ll fit right in.
• Previous construction experience is encouraged.

Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Reliable transportation.
• Ability to follow safety protocols (OSHA & Hutton standards).
• A team‑first mindset and willingness to take direction.
• Communicates clearly and works well within a team.
• Solves problems quickly and professionally.
• Comfort working indoors and outdoors in various weather.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Understands building codes, design, inspection procedures, and scheduling.
• Working knowledge on construction software (Bluebeam, ProCore, CMiC, etc.)
• Reads and interprets plans and specifications accurately.
• Leadership experience (either on school clubs, team sports, or professionally).

Work Environment

• Indoor and outdoor in a variety of weather conditions
• May require working nights or travel as needed.
• Exposure to loud noise, dust, and active construction environments.

Physical Requirements

• Able to do the following with or without reasonable accommodation:
• Lift, push or pull materials weighing up to 80 lbs. (25 lbs. consistently).
• Stand, Walk, bend, twist, turn, stoop, kneel, crawl, climb and squat in cramped or awkward positions on a frequent basis.
• Climb to unlimited heights on ladders or scaffolds.
• Operate machinery that vibrates (drills, sanders, jackhammers, etc.) on a repetitive basis.
• Perform tasks that require gross and fine hand motions and coordination.
• Perform tasks that require clear and sharp vision.
