Job summary

J.F. Brennan Company, Inc. seeks a Field Intern to gain hands-on construction experience in heavy civil and marine projects. You will support crews in the field, learn daily operations, safety practices, and how drawings translate to field work.

The role offers exposure to boats, barges, pumps, and temporary systems while collaborating with superintendents and foremen on active projects in Wisconsin. Travel and outdoor work are expected.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree or technical program in Construction Management, Civil/Construction Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Interest in field operations, heavy civil/marine construction, equipment, and construction leadership.
  • Willingness to travel and work outdoors in varying jobsite conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Work alongside superintendents, foremen, and union crews to learn daily field operations and construction activities.
  • Assist with tracking, preventative/standard maintenance, wear items, and monitoring critical equipment and tools.
  • Learn construction means and methods by observing and participating in field activities.
  • Gain hands-on exposure to heavy equipment, marine equipment, boats, barges, pumps, and other project support equipment.
  • Assist with site setup, material staging, equipment moves, trucking, deliveries, and general site logistics.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings, pre-task planning, JHAs, and jobsite safety activities.
  • Assist with tracking daily production, quantities, equipment utilization, and work completed.
  • Learn how to read project plans and understand how drawings and specifications translate to work performed in the field.
  • Work with operators and field crews to understand equipment capabilities, production expectations, and challenges encountered during construction.
  • Assist with installation, setup, and maintenance of temporary project systems and equipment as needed.
  • Support marine operations, including boats, barges, and deckhand activities when applicable.
  • Communicate with superintendents, foremen, crews, subcontractors, and project staff to support daily operations.
  • Help identify and communicate field issues that could impact safety, production, schedule, or quality.
  • Maintain a strong focus on safety, teamwork, reliability, and professionalism on the jobsite.

Field Intern

Brennan is seeking a talented and motivated Field Intern!

The Field Intern gains hands-on construction experience by working alongside superintendents, foremen, union operators, and field crews on active projects. This position focuses on learning daily field operations, equipment, jobsite logistics, safety, and construction means and methods. Interns will spend the majority of their time in the field supporting crews, assisting with project activities, and gaining practical experience in heavy civil and marine construction.

  • Ability to stay organized and accurately track basic production, quantities, and field information.
  • Good problem-solving skills and ability to adapt to changing jobsite conditions.
  • Dependable, self-motivated, and willing to take initiative.
  • Comfortable working outdoors, around heavy equipment, on or near water, and in varying weather conditions.
  • Willingness to travel and work varying schedules based on project needs.
Education/Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a degree or technical program in Construction Management, Civil/Construction Engineering, Engineering Technology, Construction Technology, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • Interest in field operations, heavy civil/marine construction, equipment, and construction leadership.
  • Previous construction, equipment, mechanical, farming, military, or other hands-on experience is a plus but not required.
  • Willingness to travel and work outdoors in varying jobsite conditions.
