Job summary

The City of Carmel is seeking a Building Inspector / Plans Examiner II to ensure homes, businesses, and spaces meet safety codes and standards. You’ll work in the field with contractors, property owners, and staff, reviewing plans and conducting inspections to keep project work moving smoothly.

Requirements include a high school diploma or GED and knowledge of construction or related trades. Training, certification within a year, and strong communication skills are valued in this public-service

Qualifications

• Experience in construction, building trades, maintenance, or a related field.
• Ability to read and understand basic building plans.
• Strong communication and customer-service skills.
• Comfort working independently in the field and around active sites.
• Ability to use computers, mobile devices, and related technology.
• Ability to obtain ICC certifications within one year of employment.
• Vocational or apprenticeship training; 1–3 years related experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Inspect residential and commercial construction at various stages, including foundations, framing, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems.
• Review plans, permits, and project information for compliance with codes and city requirements.
• Identify and document construction deficiencies and communicate required corrections.
• Answer questions from contractors, property owners, and the public about permits, inspections, and construction requirements.
• Assist with inspections of existing structures and buildings affected by severe weather or other incidents.
• Document inspections using mobile technology and city inspection systems.
• Build expertise through ongoing training and professional certification.
