Job Description

We have an opening for a Health Physicist. You will provide health physics (HP) support to LLNL programs to ensure effective implementation of the Radiation Protection Program, including field engagement, hazard evaluation, control verification, and technical documentation support. This position is within the Environment Safety & Health (ESH) Directorate.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.

You will
  • Provide HP support to LLNL programs, which includes evaluating the adequacy of personnel dosimetry, bioassay, and in-vivo monitoring. Partner with program personnel to understand moderately complex to complex radiological work, assess hazards, and verify that controls are appropriate, documented, communicated, and effective, including through routine field visits and facility inspections.

  • Review, develop, and update radiological safety and work planning documentation, including Facility Safety Plans, Work Control Documents, Radiological Work Permits, Safety Analysis Reports, Engineering Designs, and ES&H submittals.

  • Develop and deliver HP briefings and training; provide informal guidance to less experienced staff; provide feedback to management on radiation protection program performance and improvement opportunities.

  • Respond to radiological incidents and emergencies; support investigations and corrective actions; provide HP support during internal and external assessments, inspections, and verifications.

  • Coordinate with health and safety technicians performing HP sampling and assigned tasks; assist in the development and execution of the HP routine monitoring plan for assigned areas.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level
  • Using independent judgment within broadly defined policies and practices, develop techniques and evaluation criteria to address radiological hazards that may require novel approaches or new methods.

  • Provide solutions to complex radiological protection issues that may not be well defined. Provide day-to-day technical direction to health and safety technicians performing HP sampling and assigned tasks, without formal supervisory responsibility; may perform in a project leadership role; mentor less experienced personnel.

  • Represent the organization as the technical resource on HP tasks and projects and serve as a principal customer contact for assigned programs; may serve on internal technical/advisory committees; provide advice to management, regulators, reviewers, and stakeholders.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance (U.S. citizenship required).

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Physics or a related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Comprehensive knowledge and broad experience performing HP work, including conducting hazard analysis, applying health and safety standards, preparing work planning documentation, and supporting emergency response and the investigation of incidents or accidents involving radiological hazards.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of HP concepts, demonstrating full competency, including knowledge of related state and federal regulations and other consensus standards.

  • Ability to work independently with limited direction and collaborate across organizations while managing priorities and meeting schedules.

  • Analytical and computational skills, including databases and common productivity tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).

  • Ability to analyze a diverse range of moderate to complex problems and implement practical, compliant solutions through creative use of established techniques and methods.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and interruptions.

  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information to internal and external audiences.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level
  • Advanced knowledge across one or more specialized areas of Health Physics, Radiological Engineering, or Nuclear Engineering, with ability to apply and develop methods to independently deliver solutions for complex program needs.

  • Significant experience leading independent HP work, including evaluating new health and safety standards and providing technical direction to health and safety staff on HP-related matters.

  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills to present and explain technical information and provide advice to management, regulators, reviewers, and stakeholders.

Qualifications We Desire
  • Master's degree or PhD in Health Physics, or another related technical area and/or Certification by the American Board of Health Physics.

  • Knowledge and experience with Department of Energy (DOE) operations.
