Job summary

Virginia Department of Forestry (DOF) seeks a field forester for the Tidewater District, serving the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula. The role is mobile, with state vehicle, and requires hands-on forest landowner assistance and planning.

Responsibilities include evaluating sites, developing management plans, promoting riparian buffers, and coordinating with partners to protect and develop Virginia's forests.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Virginia native tree species, silvics, soils, and forest measurements.
  • Experience or training in establishing riparian buffers and tree planting.
  • Experience or training in identifying forest health issues and IPM, pesticides in forest land.
  • Ability to develop scientific forest management plans.
  • Ability to use standard forester tools to cruise timber.
  • Knowledge of Virginia silvicultural BMPs for water quality.

Responsibilities

  • Assist landowners with forest management via technical advice and plans.
  • Evaluate sites to provide guidance on management and regeneration.
  • Promote riparian buffer projects and habitat improvement.
  • Connect landowners to state/federal cost-share programs.
  • Identify and advise on forest health issues and invasive pests.
  • Coordinate with local governments and agencies on forestry matters.
