Job summary

Urban Sky is seeking a Flight Operations Technician to execute stratospheric balloon missions from prep to return, often far from HQ. The role demands travel nationwide and internationally, long days, irregular schedules, and a strong mission-first mindset.

Qualifications

  • Must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must be located near Denver, CO.
  • Willingness and eagerness to work with the DoW.
  • Valid driver's license with an insurable driving record and comfort operating full-size and heavy-duty pickup trucks for extended periods.
  • Valid U.S. passport and comfort traveling internationally.
  • Basic first-aid competency and an understanding of operating where emergency response or organizational support may be delayed.
  • Technical aptitude, basic hand and power-tool proficiency, computer literacy, attention to detail, and clear written and verbal communication.
  • Ability to safely work outdoors for extended periods in varied terrain and weather and lift and handle mission equipment and compressed-gas cylinders up to approximately 50-80 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Support the team wherever needed during mission execution; own tasks beyond a single assignment and focus on overall mission success.
  • Plan, prepare, launch, track, recover, and close out stratospheric balloon missions with personal responsibility for mission success.
  • Operate independently in remote, austere environments and in teams with limited organizational support.
  • Exercise independent field judgment to assess terrain, weather, safety, and changing conditions and decide whether to continue, modify, relocate, delay or discontinue operations.
  • PrepareBeyond the checklist by anticipating communications limitations, weather, fuel and equipment needs, access routes, and contingencies.
  • Launch and recover flight systems with safe procedures and engineering direction; document all mission data and outcomes.
  • Troubleshoot flight systems and logistics without relying on headquarters for every problem.
  • Operate full-size and heavy-duty pickup trucks during long deployments and remote field operations.
  • Represent Urban Sky professionally with customers, partners, law enforcement, landowners, and the public.
  • Document mission activity clearly through reports, photos, videos, and system records.
