Job Description
Conduct on-site engineering evaluations to help regulatory authorities determine the compliance of a product, leading to the approval of the installation. The evaluation process includes documentation review, visual and mechanical inspections, assessing suitability for installation according to adopted codes such as the National Electrical Code (NEC), testing, and preparing an engineering report. Requirements include:
- An engineering/technology degree from an accredited university
- Expert knowledge of Building Codes, NEC, field evaluations, conformity standards, and the NEC
- Ability to handle projects involving complex, new, or modified products in the field
- Experience with electrical test equipment and conducting electrical tests on products
- Understanding of industry issues, needs, and problems
- At least eight years of related experience
Responsibilities
- Determine project scope, develop investigation plans, and specify project details based on client input and product data. Frequent travel to conduct on-site evaluations, including international travel.
- Communicate with clients and authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs) to promote UL services, explain procedures, and negotiate sample requirements and completion timelines.
- Address client concerns and resolve complex issues related to product evaluations.
- Provide technical assistance and represent UL at meetings, seminars, and industry events.
- Identify non-compliance areas with applicable standards and plan, conduct, and supervise related projects.
- Develop test requirements beyond existing standards for unique or complex products and create special test methods and equipment.
- Potentially represent UL at local meetings and industry functions, providing leadership and technical advice on complex projects.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Technology, or Physics from an ABET-accredited program
- Knowledge of technical vocabulary in field evaluation
- Expertise in NEC, building codes, and conformity standards
- Ability to manage complex and unusual product evaluations
- Experience with Hazard Based Safety Engineering (HBSE) concepts
- Home-based position preferred in the Northeast (NY, Boston, CT, NJ), with proximity to an airport due to high travel demands (up to 75%)
