Job summary

Ames Construction is seeking motivated interns to join our heavy civil construction team. Position Overview

Ames Construction is looking for motivated interns to join our heavy civil construction team. The role provides hands‑on experience supporting large‑scale projects while working alongside experienced professionals in the field. Interns will assist with project coordination, technical reviews, safety monitoring, and communication with multiple stakeholders, including owners, design partners, subcontractors, and field crews.

Essential Functions
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to support a team of construction professionals.
  • Build relationships and communicate with coworkers, owners, design partners, subcontractors.
  • Review and draft technical submittals such as schedules, shop drawings, work plans, etc.
  • Understand and assist with project layout.
  • Identify critical work items and procure long‑lead items.
  • Assist with contract administration including budget and change procedures.
  • Assist with material procurement and logistics.
  • Resolve field problems and conflicts with subcontractors, suppliers, and workforce.
  • Maintain as‑built drawings & manuals.
  • Conduct research and accurately report on project status.
  • Perform quality control inspections and check work for compliance with contract documents.
  • Verify proper materials are used and installations meet project timelines and requirements.
  • Affirm safety compliance and enforce proper protocols and PPE on site.
Qualifications
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Good attention to detail with the ability to recognize discrepancies.
  • Pursuing a degree in Construction, Civil Engineering, or Construction Management, or equivalent experience.
  • Desire to grow and develop a career and mentor other coworkers.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions & Travel

Intern Positions are geographically based out of the Ames Construction Western Area office in Salt Lake City, UT but will support projects in the intermountain area including Utah, Reno, NV and/or Las Vegas, NV.

This position requires 100% in‑person support. Construction site environment – physical ability to stand, walk, crawl, bend, reach, and climb. May be exposed to high noise levels. Office environment – extensive sitting at desk and computer; some standing, bending at the waist, stooping, and reaching required; ability to lift 5‑20 pounds occasionally.
