Job summary

IES is seeking a Field Engineer II to install and operate low-voltage/structured cabling systems, troubleshoot advanced equipment, and verify field quality. You will read and interpret complex drawings and create shop drawings for new projects, coordinating with field staff and project managers.

The role includes in-house and on-site work, ownership of installation, and support during close-out. Travel within the branch or regional territory is required, with opportunities to mentor junior staff

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • 4–6 years’ commercial low voltage/structured cabling experience.
  • Ability to work well with others and lead field staff.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, MS Project).
  • Must meet driving standards and manage multiple tasks/projects.

Job Summary
  • The Field Engineer II - Structured Cabling will be able to install and operate most types of low-voltage/structured cabling systems and equipment.
  • General Job Duties and Responsibilities: The Field Engineer II - Structured Cabling will be able to troubleshoot and diagnose equipment problems in a senior service support role. That includes testing, troubleshooting of system components and functions and field verification of connections, labels, installation and work quality.
  • Will understand advanced system drawings, specifications and technical manuals. They will be able to create shop drawings and submittals for new project kick-off.
  • Skilled at managing the technical work in the field with little supervision.
  • Work could include work both "in house" and in the field when required.
  • Assume ownership of project installation and giving support to field staff and project manager. This includes providing advanced support for field installation staff.
  • Assist with maintaining and completing project punch-list for project close outs.
  • Oversee the technical aspects of projects.
  • Quality-check the projects, test all equipment and functionality and create punch lists.
  • Assist sales staff as needed with product and system demonstrations.
  • Conduct detailed field walks for prospective or change order opportunities and provide comprehensive written scope narratives, system outlines, and constructability notes to assist Estimating in crafting accurate proposals.
  • Identify and document existing conditions, infrastructure constraints, and access limitations during site assessments to inform bid strategies and value engineering options.
  • Interface with subcontractors during pre-construction activities; set up and coordinate site walks, review scope alignment, and obtain written proposals or bids as required.
  • Serve as a technical liaison between the field and Pre-Construction/Estimating, helping bridge gaps in design intent, sequence of operations, and field feasibility.
  • When workload allows, assist the Quality and Training department by developing or delivering structured guidance for Leads and Superintendents on project setup, documentation organization, and workflow planning.
  • Support the development of best practices and job readiness materials to help new leaders understand expectations around job closeout, documentation control, and startup execution.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

  • Must be able to diagnose and fix problems with existing equipment and new installs.

  • Must be able to communicate with the customer and have excellent customer service skills.
  • Must have proven high skill level to interpret blueprints and other project documents, including but not limited to specifications, reporting and quality requirements.
  • Must be able to travel within branch territory and/or regional territory as needed.

Minimum: USD $34.00 per year. Maximum: USD $41.00 per year.

Qualifications
  • Must have at least a High School diploma or GED equivalency; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Will have at least 4‑6 years’ commercial low voltage/structured cabling experience.
  • Must be able to work well with other people.
  • Must be proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and MS Project).
  • Must meet Company minimum driving standards.
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks/projects simultaneously.
  • Must have demonstrated verifiable ability to define a project, create a project scope of work, develop detailed associated tasks and manage these to final completion and customer turnover.
