Job summary

Metric Geo is seeking a Field Engineer to join its project team on major civil construction sites in New York. This hands-on role supports field leadership, interprets plans, and drives construction activities from layout through final closeout.

You will work alongside superintendents, Project Managers, and crews, focusing on earthwork, utilities, drainage, roads, and site development, with a clear path toward field leadership and project management.

Qualifications

  • 1–5 years of field engineering or heavy civil construction experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • Experience with earthwork, utilities, drainage, roads, concrete, and site development preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret civil construction drawings.
  • Familiarity with surveying, GPS layout, quantities, and field measurements.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Superintendent with daily field operations and project execution.
  • Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Assist with layout, measurements, elevations, quantities, and field verification.
  • Track daily production, manpower, materials, equipment, and progress.
  • Prepare RFIs, daily reports, field documentation, and as-builts.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, surveyors, and engineering teams.
  • Monitor work for compliance with plans, specs, and quality.
  • Plan upcoming activities with the Superintendent to maintain production.

If you want to learn construction by actually building it, this is the opportunity.

A well-established heavy civil contractor is looking for a Field Engineer to join its project team and work directly alongside Superintendents, Project Managers, foremen, subcontractors, and field crews.

This is a hands-on field position supporting major civil construction projects involving earthwork, utilities, drainage, roads, concrete, and site development.

What You'll Do

  • Support the Superintendent with daily field operations and project execution
  • Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents
  • Assist with layout, measurements, elevations, quantities, and field verification
  • Track daily production, manpower, materials, equipment, and progress
  • Perform quantity tracking and assist with pay applications and change orders
  • Prepare and maintain RFIs, daily reports, field documentation, and as-builts
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, inspectors, surveyors, and engineering teams
  • Monitor work for compliance with plans, specifications, and quality requirements
  • Help troubleshoot field issues and keep work moving safely and efficiently
  • Work closely with the Superintendent to plan upcoming activities and maintain production

What We're Looking For

  • 1–5 years of field engineering or heavy civil construction experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Construction Engineering, or related field preferred
  • Experience with earthwork, utilities, drainage, roadwork, concrete, sitework, or infrastructure preferred
  • Strong ability to read and understand civil construction drawings
  • Familiarity with construction surveying, GPS/layout, quantities, and field measurements
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with Bluebeam, AutoCAD, Procore, HCSS, or similar construction technology is a plus
  • Willingness to work primarily in the field and take ownership of assigned work
