Job description

Technical Services Field Engineer – Variable Frequency Drives & Motors

On behalf of our client, we're hiring a Technical Services Field Engineer to provide specialized variable frequency drive (VFD) and control engineering expertise, service, and maintenance — both on-site and remotely.

About Our Client

Our client manufactures variable frequency drives, control systems, and rotating machine products, and maintains a dedicated technical services team supporting clients' VFD and power conversion equipment throughout its operating life.

We are looking to pay circa $135,000 USD + 7 Weeks PTO.

About the Role

This role serves as the go-to VFD product expert for clients and colleagues alike — diagnosing and resolving equipment issues remotely and on-site, performing preventative maintenance, and feeding field learnings back into product and design improvements.

What You'll Do
  • Advise clients and colleagues to resolve on-site issues as the go-to expert for the company's VFD products
  • Provide technical support to clients and other engineers when not in the field
  • Perform preventative maintenance on client equipment
  • Analyze client equipment failures using remote diagnostics tools, performing diagnostic and repair services at client sites when necessary
  • Report any errors or deficiencies in hardware, software, or system design discovered through client and engineering consultation; implement corrective actions as assigned
  • Troubleshoot, isolate, repair, and/or replace defective components
  • Update the CRM tool with appropriate case information to ensure timely and accurate reporting
  • Draft and issue Service Advices to clients and field engineers, as approved
  • Write and submit field service reports documenting work performed
  • Maintain current safety qualifications and comply with company and client safety requirements and good safety practices
  • Configure equipment to enable suppliers to resolve product failures in a timely, cost-effective manner
  • Respond to client issues, including after regular business hours, on an assigned schedule
  • Investigate suggested field changes, report problems, and recommend solutions as necessary
  • Train client personnel on system maintenance and operation
  • Identify and recommend additional value-add products and services through proactive client engagement
  • Perform commissioning, installations, quality inspections, and performance testing of VFDs to meet design performance criteria, as assigned
What We're Looking For
Required:
  • Bachelor of Science in electrical, mechanical, or a related engineering field, or equivalent via education and/or work experience
  • 3 years of field engineering experience in power conversion (AC VFD engineering), with familiarity in power distribution, power electronics, and rotating machine products
  • Demonstrated success building strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, and other internal and external contacts
  • Strong personal leadership, interpersonal, organizational, administrative, and communication skills
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Availability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 50% of the time, occasionally with limited notice
Preferred:
  • 5 years of technical services, field, or customer support engineering experience in AC and DC Variable Frequency Drives (VFD) in an industrial environment
  • Field engineering experience in metals rolling, container crane systems, and/or paper industries
  • Legacy AC and DC VFD engineering experience
  • Controls engineering experience in LAN topology and industrial communication protocols (e.g., ISBUS, Profibus, Modbus, EGD, DeviceNet, and similar)
  • Experience working with PLCs manufactured by major industrial automation vendors
  • Demonstrated ability to install, inspect, and maintain equipment per relevant operating/installation instructions
  • Fluency in Spanish or Mandarin, written and verbal, in addition to English, for international client communications
