Job summary

Stantec's Water practice in Tampa, FL seeks a Field Engineer to observe and document contractor activities on civil and water resources projects. The role requires self-direction, ability to work with multidiscipline teams, and a passion for delivering quality construction outcomes.

The successful candidate will spend most time at field sites, supporting project delivery, QA/QC, and coordination with contractors while maintaining safety and quality standards.

Qualifications

  • Education: degree in construction management or related field.
  • Experience: minimum 2 years in construction or design of water/wastewater facilities.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word and Excel, REVU Bluebeam, and iOS apps to create field reports.
  • Knowledge of underground utility construction methods.
  • Ability to observe and document field work and communicate issues clearly.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor, inspect, and document contractor work and daily reports.
  • Coordinate submittals, RFIs, and QA/QC plan.
  • Analyze issues that affect scope, schedule, or cost.
  • Prepare and track meeting minutes and agendas.

Stantec's Water practice has an opportunity for a full-time Field Engineer who is excited about the civil and water resources fields to join our team in Tampa, FL.

The successful candidate will work on challenging and diverse tasks in a consulting and construction quality assurance role that will require application of technical skills, project delivery, and leadership for construction projects.

Your role will be to observe and record activities associated with the Contractor’s construction progress in a fast-paced environment. The selected candidate will need to be self-directed, capable of independent tasks as well as supporting multidiscipline complex teams, and should demonstrate a passion for involvement in the civil construction industry with an enthusiasm for successful completion of projects that meet our clients’ needs.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Under limited supervision, assist with monitoring, inspecting and documenting the construction contractor’s work and develop an understanding of the comprehensive written Daily Report that includes such observation and description of all work activities, measurement of installed material quantities, an accounting of labor and equipment resources utilized, a statement of general compliance or non-compliance with the work, and supporting video and photographs of the work in progress.
  • Under limited supervision, coordinate project submittals, review comments, RFIs, RFPs, and incorporate into the quality control inspection plan.
  • Review, analyze and document any construction issues potentially resulting in a scope, time or cost impact to the work of the Contractor which may result in a change to the contract.
  • Maintain attention to detail during a project’s construction while thinking ahead about the work to follow and project requirements so minor problems can be identified before they develop into larger problems.
  • Attend, as necessary, Weekly Progress Meetings with Contractor, including review of progress to planned schedule.
  • Prepare progress meeting agenda and timely follow up with meeting minutes
  • Assist with documenting compliance and non-compliance with established quality control and quality assurance procedures.
  • Assist with preparation of a project punch list for deficient or uncompleted work by the construction contractor.
  • Ability to clearly communicate field issues and concerns with contractors, vendors, and leadership
  • Ability to spend 75% of the time at different job sites, and 25% in the office.
Qualifications - External

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Understands underground utility construction for potable water, sanitary sewer, raw water, and stormwater infrastructure, as well as the different methods used during their construction.
  • The Construction Inspector will work in a field office or vehicle at a project site and will be required to work in a manner that ensures personal safety as well as the safety of fellow employees by following project and company health and safety guidelines and policies for planning and executing work in a safe manner.
  • Understand single-point field inspection of the construction contractor’s work representing the Project Manager in the field.
  • Develop an understanding of written reports documenting QA/QC inspections, non-compliance notices, and corrective actions.
  • Basic knowledge of how to develop and maintain master as-built drawing information.
  • Develop understanding of contract documents and test plan for a designated Work Package for a specific construction activity.
  • Develop an understanding of project specific quality control and quality assurance documents and standards for projects that are under development.
  • Develops rapport and trust with others.
  • Effectively understands and meets client needs.
  • Strong organizational skills, along with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and demonstrate a flexible approach to work assignments.
  • Positive attitude, good energy, and proven passion.
  • Capable of demonstrating competency in using Microsoft Office and iOS applications to create field work reports.

Education and Experience

  • Education: Prefer degree in construction management or professional discipline specific field from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of experience in construction or design of water, wastewater utility plant, pump station, or similar facilities. construction field required.
  • Acquires specific experience through on-the job consulting projects and executing standard tasks.
  • Must be proficient using Microsoft Word and Excel, REVU Bluebeam, and iOS applications to create field work reports

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
