Qualifications

Responsibilities

Wharton-Smith, Inc., a highly regarded General Contractor throughout the Southeast, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Field Engineer – Water/Wastewater. We are currently seeking someone who is willing to work in Sanford, NC.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The Field Engineer supports the Superintendent and serves as a liaison between Superintendents, Subcontractors, and Project Engineers to help ensure successful project completion. This role assists with work plan development, coordination of multiple subcontractor activities, contract administration, and overall field operations to support project execution, schedule, quality, and compliance requirements.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Coordinate and assist with facility start-up activities
  • Attend meetings (Sub, progress, and team)
  • Maintain logs and files (field, equipment, delivery, concrete tracking, rental tracking)
  • Identify need for Request for Information (RFI)
  • Manage field Request for Information (RFI)
  • Manage approved submittals to ensure quality control and compliance with onsite operations
  • Maintain as-built drawings (Electronic and Hard Set)
  • Material purchasing, expediting, and handling (field purchase orders)
  • Maintain material control system (all materials that enter site)
  • Monitor and report productivity
  • Small pipe/ PVC take-offs
  • Layout (use of survey equipment, batter boards, string lines)
  • Maintain drawing control system and field files
  • Create spare parts list/inventory for turnover
  • Schedule building department inspections (walk with inspector)
  • Understand Project Cost Accounting (PCA) budgets
  • Verify correctness of work
  • Assist with QC Management (Pre-pour Checklist, Completion Lists)
  • Create equipment maintenance/ storage log
  • Small tool management
  • Understand Sub/ PO Scopes
  • Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP)
  • Client and RPR relations
  • Take daily progress photos
  • Complete project closeout after substantial completion
  • Coordinate Locates and One Call tickets
  • Coordinates with Virtual Design Construction (VDC) Business unit
  • Create and maintain spare parts list
  • Assist with Daily Reports
  1. Safety:
  • Schedule training as required
  • Conduct daily inspections
  • Schedule new hire safety orientation
  • Assign and review STA’s conducted by Foreman (conduct STA meeting on small project)
  • Set an example by following all rules and enforcing all safety rules
  • Conduct weekly safety meetings
  • Set up and maintain MSDS book for each project
  • Assist in ensuring operations that will maintain zero accidents
  • Manage jobsite incident/ accident Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
  • Current training as Competent Person in Trenching, Scaffolds, Rigging, Confined Space, Fall Protection, OSHA 10-hour, First Aid & CPR
  • Manage Subcontractor onsite safety
  1. Production System:
  • Create production plans
  • Maintain weekly PPC
  • Maintain 6-week schedule (send out on Friday’s to Subs)
  • Lead end of shift meetings
  • Assist in production board updates
  • Attend weekly team meetings
  • Lead after action review meetings on activities
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or another relevant field.
  • Zero (0) to four (4) years of construction-related experience.
  • Ability to effectively communicate and coordinate with Project Managers, Project Superintendents, and Foremen to receive direction and provide project support.
  • Training and/or certification as a Competent Person in applicable areas, including:
    • Trenching
    • Scaffolding
    • Rigging
    • Confined Space
    • Fall Protection
    • OSHA 10-Hour
    • First Aid & CPR
    • Silica
    • Risk Management
  • Knowledge of surveying fundamentals.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability and willingness to work in an active construction jobsite environment and varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, noise, and dust.
  • Ability to safely navigate uneven surfaces, ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, and similar structures.
  • Ability to perform physical job duties for extended periods, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, crawling, reaching, grasping, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds and meet the physical requirements necessary to safely perform essential job functions.
  • Ability to work a flexible project-based schedule, including nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
  • Ability to travel daily to assigned jobsite(s), with occasional overnight travel based on project requirements.
  • Preferred Qualifications: Six (6) years of construction-related experience with a proven record of quality and profitable craftwork, along with current Competent Person certifications in trenching, scaffolding, rigging, confined space, fall protection, OSHA 10-Hour, First Aid & CPR, silica, and risk management, as well as knowledge of surveying fundamentals.
