Job summary

Middough, headquartered near Pittsburgh, is seeking an on-site Field Engineer to oversee a brownfield project with a ~$400MM TIC. You will ensure construction aligns with Middough's design, budget, schedule and safety parameters, with on-site presence at a client facility and periodic visits to Cranberry Township offices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Construction or Project Management preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in heavy industrial construction – expertise in structural, mechanical/piping, and/or electrical is preferred.
  • 3+ years working with construction scopes of work, project budgets, and schedules.
  • OSHA 10-hour safety certification is preferred.
  • PMP certification or PE preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to multi-task and be highly organized for effective project planning and completion.
  • Excellent attention to detail and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Administer the project scope, schedule, and cost baselines.
  • Lead construction and engineering change management efforts, measure performance against plans and implement corrective actions as required.
  • Assist and coordinate internal and external communications regarding construction activities.
  • Collaborate with project managers, construction management, engineering, environmental, supply chain managers, and other project stakeholders to ensure coordinated execution.
  • Manage and administer project contracts to ensure compliance with contractual terms and conditions.
  • Anticipate, identify, and resolve project challenges and risks by establishing priorities and directing effective problem‑solving efforts.
  • Ensure timely, accurate schedule updates, cost tracking, forecasting, and invoicing.
  • Monitor, track, and communicate project progress related to baselined schedules and milestones, forecasted and approved expenditures, and project status.
  • Oversee brownfield construction activities as an owner's engineering representative: heavy structural steel erection, metal/mill building installations, excavation and deep foundation systems, large concrete structures, wastewater treatment plant systems, piping installations for utilities, industrial ventilation, electrical installations, commissioning and startup support.

Job description

Field Engineer - Position and Responsibilities

As an On‑site Field Engineer with Middough, you will oversee construction efforts on a brownfield project (~$400MM TIC) to ensure the project is constructed in accordance with Middough's design, as well as the client's budget, schedule, and safety parameters. This position primarily requires being on-site at a client facility in the Pittsburgh area, as well as periodic visits to Middough offices in Cranberry Township, PA. In the Field Engineer role, you will work with the client and constructors to ensure the project quality and safety standards are followed. As the Field Engineer, you will interface with the client, architects, engineers, union contractors, subcontractors, security, and safety representatives to plan, coordinate and/or supervise field personnel activities on the assigned project. Additionally, as the Field Engineer, you will implement various client quality and safety policies, while managing daily construction activities.

  • Oversee the following brownfield construction activities (not direct construction) as an owner's engineering representative:
    • Heavy structural steel erection, including large‑scale industrial frameworks and supports.
    • Metal and mill building installations, including both pre‑engineering and custom structural systems.
    • Excavation activities and deep foundation systems, including piling and specialty foundation installations.
    • Large and elevated concrete structures, including foundations, pedestals, and structural elements.
    • Industrial wastewater treatment plant systems and associated piping installation.
    • Large and small‑bore piping installations for plant utilities, including water, steam, natural gas, oxygen, argon, and compressed air.
    • Industrial ventilation, dust collection, and baghouse systems.
    • Electrical installations involving substations, and high, medium, and low‑voltage equipment.
    • Commissioning and startup assistance for mechanical/piping and electrical/instrumentation and controls.
Education, Experience and Skills
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Construction or Project Management preferred.
  • Prior project engineer, field engineer, or construction manager role experience required.
  • 5+ years of experience in heavy industrial construction – expertise in structural, mechanical/piping, and/or electrical is preferred.
  • 3+ years working with construction scopes of work, project budgets, and schedules.
  • Ability to establish and maintain relationships at all levels within the company and at client site around professionalism, trust, integrity, and collaboration.
  • OSHA 10‑hour safety certification is preferred.
  • PMP certification or PE preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
  • Ability to multi‑task and be highly organized for effective project planning and completion.
  • Excellent attention to detail.

Physical Requirements
  • Remain in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Frequently walk, reach with hands and arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop or kneel, bend or twist, use repeating motions that may include the wrists/hands/fingers and talk and hear.
  • Frequently use up‑close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Should not expect adverse environmental conditions within company offices.
  • May be exposed to adverse environmental conditions (such as climbing ladders and/or stairs, extreme heat and/or cold, and/or poor air quality) when on‑site at a client facility. Noise levels may be moderate to high at various client sites, hearing protection may be required and/or provided. Safety protections provided by the client and/or company are required to be used and followed.
  • May require occasional car or air travel to other company locations or client sites.
  • This position requires the candidate/employee to possess and maintain a valid driver's license in their state of residence and auto insurance coverage.
