The Nebraska Department of Transport ation (NDOT) invites applications for an engineering role at the Professional Engineer I or Engineer level. The position offers hands-on field engineering within heavy highway construction, with mentoring under a licensed PE.

Pay ranges include $36.443–$53.722 per hour for PE I and $31.968 per hour for Engineer, with potential promotion to PE I after licensure and required certifications. Lincoln, Nebraska-based work with regular site exposure.

  • FE exam within one year of employment for Engineer track; EIT certification preferred.

Job description

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) is seeking a dedicated and hardworking team player to join us in our mission to enhance the quality of life for Nebraskans by building and maintaining a convenient, safe, and innovative statewide transportation system!

Depending on qualifications, the position may be filled at the Professional Engineer I or Engineer level.

Qualifications for the various levels are listed in the Requirements / Qualifications section below.

Pay range for the Professional Engineer I classification is $36.443 – $53.722 per hour. The pay rate is commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints, if approved.

Pay rate for the Engineer classification is $31.968 per hour. Employee may be promoted to the Professional Engineer I classification upon acquiring the necessary certifications, to include professional licensure, and demonstration of skills.

Job Duties:

Under the guidance of a Licensed Professional Engineer, the successful applicant will gain hands-on experience and personalized mentoring while building a strong foundation in field engineering and heavy highway construction. This position offers an excellent opportunity to learn from experienced professionals, take on meaningful responsibilities, and develop the skills needed for a successful career in transportation engineering.

The successful applicant will be exposed to a wide variety of projects and disciplines, including grading, pavements, structures, construction inspection, materials testing, traffic control, project development, and project management. As experience grows, there will be opportunities to take on greater responsibility, including coordinating work, managing resources, and working directly with contractors, the public, landowners, and public officials.

Examples of work:
  • Perform engineering assignments supporting heavy highway construction projects.
  • Apply engineering and construction management principles to real-world projects.
  • Perform, coordinate, and supervise construction inspection and surveying activities.
  • Prepare project records, reports, estimates, and other technical documentation.
  • Interpret plans and specifications.
  • Work with NDOT staff and contractors to help resolve field challenges.
  • Provide technical information and project updates to contractors, landowners, and the public.
  • Participate in project development, traffic control planning, scheduling, and resource management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:

Professional Engineer I: Bachelor’s degree in an engineering discipline. Must possess a Professional Engineer (P.E.) license at the time of application and be licensed by the Nebraska Board of Engineers and Architects at time of employment or be able to obtain such license within 90 days of employment.

Engineer: Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline. Must pass the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) within one year of employment

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering.
  • Successful completion of FE examination/EIT certification.
  • Experience in roadway design and/or transportation construction.
Other:
  • Engineer Classification Only – Degree must be from an EAC/ABET or CEAB(Canada)-accredited engineering program OR meet the NCEES Engineering Education Standard.
  • Applicant must have a valid driver’s license.
  • Overnight travel will be required on occasion.
  • May be required to work extended hours that may include nights, evenings, and weekends.
  • Depending on the time of year and assigned construction projects, may be required to work outside in the elements for an extended period of time.
  • Regular and reliable attendance is required.
