Job summary

GCS Recruitment is seeking a Field Engineer to support the installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of telecommunications and network infrastructure. The role involves travel to central offices, data centers, and customer sites to install and service DWDM, optical transport, SONET, OTN, Ethernet, and IP transport equipment.

The ideal candidate will perform circuit turn-ups, optical testing, fiber certification, and fault isolation while coordinating with customers

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Travel to customer sites, central offices, data centers, and network facilities to perform field engineering activities.
• Install, configure, provision, test, and maintain DWDM and optical transport equipment.
• Perform equipment installation, hardware replacement, line card swaps, and network upgrades.
• Support the deployment and maintenance of SONET, OTN, Ethernet, Carrier Ethernet, and IP transport services.
• Perform circuit turn-ups, service activations, acceptance testing, and circuit grooming.
• Conduct optical testing using OTDRs, power meters, fiber scopes, BERT/PRBS testers, and transport test equipment.
• Perform fiber inspection, certification, characterization, and optical fault isolation.
• Troubleshoot problems involving fiber, optical signals, network hardware, transport equipment, and Layer 1 connectivity.
• Identify and isolate network faults and work with Network Operations and Engineering teams to restore services.
• Support network restoration and emergency outage activities when required.
• Install and support customer premise equipment (CPE) and enterprise network services.
• Work with transport equipment from vendors such as Ciena, Infinera, Nokia, Fujitsu, Cisco, Ribbon, Adtran, Juniper, and Alcatel-Lucent.
• Perform preventative maintenance and equipment inspections.
• Verify equipment, cabling, fiber connections, labeling, power, and network connectivity during installations.
• Document field activities, test results, equipment changes, circuit information, and restoration activities.
• Maintain accurate inventory, maintenance records, and trouble-ticket updates.
• Coordinate with customers, contractors, vendors, Network Operations, and engineering teams to complete field assignments.
• Follow site access, safety, security, change-management, and telecommunications installation procedures.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Field Engineer to support the installation, commissioning, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of telecommunications and network infrastructure.

This is a hands‑on field position supporting DWDM, optical transport, SONET, OTN, Ethernet, IP transport, fiber optic infrastructure, and carrier‑grade network equipment. The Field Engineer will travel to central offices, data centers, network facilities, and customer locations to perform equipment installations, circuit turn‑ups, optical testing, fault isolation, maintenance, and network restoration activities.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working in the field, troubleshooting network issues independently, working with technical teams and customers, and using fiber and network test equipment to identify and resolve service‑impacting issues.

• Understand how optical signals travel through metro and long‑haul fiber networks.

• Perform circuit turn‑ups and service activation from initial installation through customer acceptance.

• Troubleshoot issues at the fiber, optical, hardware, Layer 1, and transport layers.

• Install and replace line cards, transponders, optical modules, multiplexers, and transport shelves.

• Work with ROADM and optical multiplexing technologies.

• Perform BERT, PRBS, RFC2544, and other network acceptance tests.

• Develop structured fault‑isolation and troubleshooting techniques.

• Support network outages, emergency restoration, and service recovery.

• Gain experience working directly with customers and telecommunications service providers.

• Learn how carrier networks are operated, maintained, documented, and upgraded.

• Develop field skills in equipment installation, fiber management, cabling, labeling, testing, and site standards.

• Gain exposure to different telecommunications platforms and equipment manufacturers.

• Build strong experience working across central offices, data centers, network facilities, and customer premises.
