Job summary

Job description

The Field Engineer reports to the Project Manager and performs engineering duties in the planning, design coordination, and execution of tunnel, shaft, and underground construction systems. This position offers direct exposure to large-scale underground equipment, complex mechanical systems, civil and geotechnical engineering, and hands on real‑world problem solving not typically available in traditional design roles.

Principal Functional Responsibilities:

The position holds a wide variety of responsibilities that include, but are not limited to:

  • Plan and support construction activities based on contract documents, drawings, specifications, and geological data.
  • Record, analyze and report construction activities, equipment performance, and system productivity.
  • Prepare cost estimates for labor, equipment, materials, and temporary works.
  • Perform engineering calculations related to loads, stresses, fluid flow, pressure, and equipment performance.
  • Perform basic geotechnical and structural analysis.
  • Develop and review CAD drawings for equipment layouts and construction sequencing.
  • Perform hands‑on field engineering activities including equipment inspections, system installation, and troubleshooting in the active tunnel environment.
  • Assist with quality control activities including document control, survey coordination, and material sampling.
  • Maintaining and assisting in troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems, and data networks.
  • Interface with superintendents, mechanics, electricians, and subcontractors to resolve field issues efficiently.
Essential Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil, Mining, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Prior related internship experience
  • Ability to work a multi‑shift operation and occasional Saturdays.
  • Strong technical report writing and documentation skills
  • Proficient computer skills; experience with HCSS Heavy Job experience is a plus.
  • Self‑motivated with the ability to adapt to fast‑paced, evolving field conditions.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to analyze data and implement practical, field‑driven solutions.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner, analyzing data and developing resourceful solutions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry 20–30 lbs and work in a confined space environment that is 80–150 feet below ground.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
