Job summary

Ampirical is seeking a dependable Field Distribution Specialist III to join the Cappstone Energy Group. The role focuses on electric distribution project design for single phase, three phase, and upgrade work, with emphasis on safety and regulatory compliance.

Travel is primarily within the state and may require overnight stays. You will design layouts, draft construction packages, and support senior engineers while coordinating with field crews and internal teams.

Qualifications

• Associate or bachelor’s degree in engineering tech, drafting/design, or related field preferred; equivalent field experience accepted.
• 4+ years of electric distribution design or related utility work.
• Knowledge of electric distribution systems, equipment, and design practices.
• Proficiency in design/drafting software and GIS.

Job description

We are seeking a dependable Field Distribution Specialist III to join Ampirical. This role is part of our Cappstone Energy Group team, which focuses on delivering specialized field services that support the safe and reliable operation of utility infrastructure. The Field Distribution Specialist III is responsible for designing and supporting electric distribution projects with a primary focus on single phase, three phase, and double-circuit line extensions or upgrades, re-insulation and reconductor jobs, tie-line projects, Railroad crossings, easement acquisition and DOT permitting. This position requires strong technical understanding, attention to detail, and field coordination to ensure safe and efficient project execution. The Specialist III also assists with more advanced projects to continue building advanced design skills and system knowledge. Most travel is within the state and may occasionally require overnight stays.

What You’ll Do:

• Perform field assessments and collect data for all types of line extensions, and line upgrades.
• Design and draft distribution layouts, ensuring compliance with company standards, engineering specifications, and safety regulations.
• Prepare detailed construction packages including staking sheets and drawings.
• Support senior designers and engineers in higher-complexity designs.
• Coordinate with internal teams and field crews to clarify design intent and resolve construction issues.
• Ensure all work adheres to safety policies, NESC standards, RUS standards (if applicable) and applicable regulations.
• Design and submit required permits for the Department of Transportation, railroad companies, county roads, transmission line encroachments, etc., as needed for your assigned jobs.
• Maintain accurate records and update design systems with project and field data.
• Identify opportunities for process improvement and contribute to team efficiency initiatives.

What You Bring:

• Associate or bachelor's degree in engineering technology, drafting/design, or related field preferred; equivalent field experience accepted.
• 4+ years of experience in electric distribution design or related utility work.
• Working knowledge of electric distribution systems, equipment, and design practices.
• Proficiency in design/drafting software, GIS, or related tools.
• Ability to perform field work in varying conditions.
• A valid driver’s license is required.
• Advanced understanding of electric distribution systems, NESC requirements and RUS design standards.
