Job summary

Suffolk is seeking a City Inspector to supervise and inspect local construction projects to ensure compliance with planning and development policies. Under general supervision, you will review plans, test materials, and ensure safety and quality in sewer, water, and roadway work while coordinating with contractors and the public.

The role requires a high school diploma, 1–2 years in construction or building inspections, a valid driver’s license, and DEQ certifications within 18 months.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and 1–2 years in construction trades or building inspections.
• Driver's license valid in Virginia; ability to travel within city limits.
• DEQ erosion and stormwater certifications within 18 months of employment.
• Knowledge of codes, plans, and city building regulations.

Responsibilities

• Inspect construction projects for compliance with city ordinances and standards.
• Review project plans, revisions, and related documents for conformity.
• Test materials and monitor erosion and sediment controls on site.
• Coordinate with contractors, property owners, and engineers; prepare reports.
• Conduct final inspections on city right-of-way improvements and safety checks.
• Maintain records of inspections, estimates, and project status.
