Job summary

Suffolk is seeking a Building Inspector I to enforce state and local building codes across residential and commercial projects. You will review plans, inspect electrical, mechanical, and plumbing installations, and issue notices for noncompliance.

Strong communication with owners, contractors, and the public is essential. You must be able to obtain relevant Virginia certifications within 18 months and achieve full certification within 3 years.

Qualifications

• Graduation from high school and 3 years of experience in trade.
• Virginia Tradesman License preferred.
• Valid driver's license required.

Responsibilities

• Inspect building, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing projects for code compliance.
• Review construction plans and issue violation notices for noncompliance.
• Coordinate inspection schedules and maintain inspection records.
• Assist callers and provide information on inspections and permits.
• Maintain and update training and certifications with the VDCH Training Office.
• Attend emergencies as needed and perform on-call duties.
