About the Role
Bioyond Robotics is seeking a scientifically trained Field Applications & Automation Engineer to support the growth of our U.S. business.
This individual will serve as the primary scientific and technical partner to customers throughout the pre-sales and post-sales lifecycle. The role will work closely with scientists, automation groups, process-development teams, manufacturing and production organizations, analytical-development groups, QC laboratories, and commercial teams to understand complex workflows and translate them into practical automation solutions.
The successful candidate will combine a strong life-science background with hands-on laboratory automation experience. They must be comfortable moving between scientific workflow discussions, technical solution design, customer demonstrations, method development, integrated-system implementation, and post-installation application support.
What You Will Do
- Lead scientific and technical discovery meetings with customers in research, multi-omics, process development, manufacturing, MSAT, analytical development, QC, and laboratory automation organizations.
- Document current-state and future-state workflows, including sample types, liquid volumes, plate and consumable formats, throughput requirements, process timing, dependencies, critical quality requirements, data flows, and operator interactions.
- Translate customer workflows into user requirements, automation concepts, system configurations, technical proposals, statements of work, and acceptance criteria.
- Design integrated solutions using Bioyond liquid-handling robots, material-handling robots, plate storage, scheduling and control software, and third-party laboratory instruments.
- Evaluate and support multi-omics workflows such as nucleic acid extraction, normalization, PCR and qPCR setup, NGS library preparation, methylation workflows, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, mass-spectrometry sample preparation, and related high-throughput sample-preparation processes.
- Support biologics development and manufacturing workflows used by production, process development, MSAT, analytical development, and QC groups. Relevant workflows may include cell-line development, clone screening, media and feed preparation, upstream process-development sampling, downstream purification sample preparation, buffer preparation, protein purification, ELISA, titer analysis, protein concentration, chromatography sample preparation, and other at-line or offline analytical workflows.
- Develop, configure, test, and optimize automated methods, including deck layouts, liquid classes, pipetting parameters, scheduling logic, robotic movements, device integrations, error-recovery routines, and unattended operation.
- Support pre-sales activities including technical presentations, workflow consultations, instrument demonstrations, feasibility studies, proofs of concept, RFP responses, site assessments, technical proposal development, and customer-facing ROI discussions.
- Partner with sales to establish technical credibility, identify customer risks and requirements, and ensure proposed solutions are both scientifically appropriate and operationally achievable.
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing, application commissioning, method transfer, customer training, workflow validation, and post-installation optimization.
- Troubleshoot application, software, consumable, liquid-handling, scheduling, and workflow-related issues, collaborating with the Field Service Engineer and Bioyond's global engineering and applications teams when necessary.
- Create and maintain protocols, application documentation, SOPs, training materials, workflow diagrams, technical reports, application notes, and reusable solution templates.
- Capture customer feedback and field requirements and communicate them to product management, engineering, software, and applications-development teams.
- Represent Bioyond at customer workshops, conferences, industry events, demonstrations, and technical seminars.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's, master's, or doctoral degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, biological engineering, pharmaceutical sciences, or a related scientific discipline.
- At least four years of relevant experience in laboratory automation, field applications, assay development, process development, scientific instrumentation, or an equivalent customer-facing technical role.
- Hands-on experience with automated liquid handlers, laboratory robotics, integrated workcells, or high-throughput scientific instrumentation.
- Demonstrated scientific depth in at least one of the following areas, with practical working knowledge of the other: multi-omics and molecular workflows, including genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, NGS, PCR/qPCR, or sample preparation; or biologics development and manufacturing workflows, including upstream process development, downstream processing, analytical development, QC, production, or MSAT.
- Ability to understand a manual scientific protocol and convert it into an automated, scalable, reproducible workflow.
- Experience developing or optimizing automated methods, protocols, scripts, or instrument programs.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across scientific methods, liquid handling, consumables, hardware, software, scheduling, and integrated workflows.
- Strong customer-facing communication, presentation, training, and relationship-management skills.
- Ability to work independently in a field-based environment while collaborating effectively across global commercial, engineering, applications, service, and product teams.
- Willingness and ability to travel approximately 40%-60%, sometimes on short notice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with platforms from Hamilton, Tecan, Beckman Coulter, Agilent, HighRes Biosolutions, Biosero, Opentrons, Thermo Fisher Scientific, or comparable laboratory-automation providers.
- Experience integrating centrifuges, incubators, plate readers, washers, sealers, peelers, thermocyclers, analytical instruments, barcode readers, robotic arms, and other third-party devices.
