Job summary

Cogent Communications is seeking a field-focused Network Engineer to support the Cogent global IP network in California. You will lead installation, turn-up, and testing of new circuits at data centers and carrier neutral facilities, and maintain fiber, DWDM, and transmission equipment on the Cogent backbone.

The role requires 5+ years of telecom network experience, 1+ year in DWDM/IP networks, and hands-on use of OPM, OTDR, OSA, and Ethernet/IP testers.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience on telecommunication networks.
• 1+ years of field experience in DWDM and/or IP networks.
• Experience using telecom test equipment (OPM/OLS, OTDR, OSA, Ethernet/IP testers).
• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• High-energy individual with good interpersonal skills to drive projects to completion.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for all network field activity on Cogent network.
• Install network elements within Cogent locations (data centers, POPs, hubs).
• Turn-up and test new customer circuits at Cogent data centers and carrier-neutral facilities; document changes.
• Maintain Cogent fiber network (locates, maintenance, splicing, restoration, transmission equipment maintenance).
• Manage contractors and vendors; collaborate with planning and delivery teams.

Compensation

Starting / Initial Base Salary Pay Range: $54,000 - $90,000

Specific offers within the listed pay ranges are determined by a variety of factors such as experience, education, skills, certifications and business needs.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for all network field activity on Cogent network.
• Installation of Network Elements within Cogent Communications locations (Data centers, POPs, Hubs).
• Turn-up and test new customer circuits at Cogent Data Centers, carrier neutral datacenters, and multitenant office buildings, document and communicate changes.
• Responsible for maintaining the Cogent fiber network (locates, maintenance, splicing, emergency restoration, transmission equipment maintenance)
• Responsible for maintaining Cogent Data Centers (facility maintenance, compliance, equipment maintenance)
• Management of contractors and vendors.
• Independent and self-starter.
• Work with Network Planning and Customer Service Delivery to provide Field perspective to network deployment as well as to provide expertise in deployments.
• Maintain proficiency within the telecommunications infrastructure, fiber, CWDM and DWDM technologies.
• Work with AC and DC power systems.

Qualifications

• Travel 30%, 5+ years of experience on telecommunication networks.
• 1+ years of field experience in DWDM and / or IP networks
• Experience in the use of telecommunications test equipment: optical power meters (OPM – OLS), OTDR, OSA, Ethernet / IP testers; interpretation of test results
• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• High-energy individual with interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate peers, and drive project to completion.

Additional Desired Qualifications

• Project Management experience.
• Experience on daily operations of a Datacenter (Diesel Generator, UPS, HVAC).
• Experience maintaining a fiber network.
