Job summary

Cogent Communications is a global, Tier 1 ISP seeking a Network Field Engineer to own field activity, install network elements, turn‑up and test customer circuits, and maintain fiber networks and data centers. Responsibilities include field deployment, site maintenance, and coordination with contractors.

Requires 5+ years in telecom networks, 1+ year in DWDM/IP field work, proficiency with OPM/OLS, OTDR, OSA, and Ethernet/IP testers, plus strong problem solving and interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience on telecommunication networks.
• 1+ years of field experience in DWDM and/or IP networks.
• Experience using telecommunications test equipment (OPM/OLS, OTDR, OSA, Ethernet/IP testers).
• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• High-energy team player with interpersonal skills.

Responsibilities

• Responsible for all network field activity on Cogent network.
• Install Network Elements within Cogent locations (Data centers, POPs, Hubs).
• Turn‑up and test new customer circuits at Cogent Data Centers and carrier neutral datacenters; document and communicate changes.
• Maintain Cogent fiber network (locates, maintenance, splicing, emergency restoration, equipment maintenance).
• Maintain Cogent Data Centers (facility maintenance, compliance, equipment maintenance).
• Manage contractors and vendors; work with Network Planning and Customer Service Delivery.

Compensation: [Starting / Initial] Base Salary Pay Range: $54,000 - $90,000

Specific offers within the listed pay ranges are determined by a variety of factors such as experience, education, skills, certifications and business needs.

Responsibilities

• Turn‑up and test new customer circuits at Cogent Data Centers, carrier neutral datacenters, and multitenant office buildings, document and communicate changes.
• Responsible for maintaining the Cogent fiber network (locates, maintenance, splicing, emergency restoration, transmission equipment maintenance)
• Responsible for maintaining Cogent Data Centers (facility maintenance, compliance, equipment maintenance)
• Management of contractors and vendors.
• Independent and self‑starter.
• Work with Network Planning and Customer Service Delivery to provide Field perspective to network deployment as well as to provide expertise in deployments.
• Maintain proficiency within the telecommunications infrastructure, fiber, CWDM and DWDM technologies.
• Work with AC and DC power systems.

Qualifications

• Travel 30%, 5+ years of experience on telecommunication networks.
• 1+ years of field experience in DWDM and / or IP networks
• Experience in the use of telecommunications test equipment: optical power meters (OPM - OLS), OTDR, OSA, Ethernet / IP testers; interpretation of test results
• Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills.
• High‑energy individual with interpersonal skills to work effectively with others, motivate peers, and drive project to completion.

Additional Desired Qualifications

• Experience on daily operations of a Datacenter (Diesel Generator, UPS, HVAC).
• Experience maintaining a fiber network.
