Job description

Position Overview

This position with NCDOT offers full State Benefits, competitive salaries, and many career development opportunities.

Internal Posting Only: Temporary or Permanent NCDOT Employees or layoff candidates with the NC Department of Transportation eligible for RIF priority reemployment consideration as described by GS 126 may apply.

Responsibilities
  1. Direct parking of trucks, automobiles, and trailers on the vessel deck to ensure proper weight distribution and chock wheels to prevent movement during transit.
  2. Patrol the deck area to maintain discipline, order, and safety, preventing unauthorized access and unsafe passenger behaviors.
  3. Investigate accidents during loading/unloading and assist in preparing detailed reports for the ferry operations manager.
  4. Monitor passengers for suspicious activities and report to the ferry captain following Homeland Security guidelines.
  5. Oversee rescue boat activities, including supervising a deckhand.
  6. Inspect all deck machinery and fixtures for proper operation and assist with routine maintenance and repairs.
  7. Steer the vessel under the supervision of the ferry captain and assist in emergency situations.
  8. Perform related duties as required.
Work Details

This position is based at Pamlico River Ferry Operations and involves shift work—7 days on, 7 days off.

Qualifications
  • Must present a valid TWIC and USCG Merchant Mariner Credential, including a current medical card, at the interview.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of navigational rules, emergency response, vessel stability, and rescue boat operations.
  • Ability to handle firefighting equipment and perform physical tasks such as pulling hoses and lifting.
Additional Requirements

Possession of a US Coast Guard Able Seaman Certificate and a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) is required.
