Salary: New employees start at $28.12 per hour (Step 8) (This includes a 30% stipend)

Job Description:

This position serves as a relief Able-Bodied Seaman aboard one of our Ferry vessels. Based in Rockland, Maine, the Maine State Ferry Service provides transportation to Maine’s Island communities. Candidates may be assigned to routes including Vinalhaven, North Haven, Swans Island, or Islesboro.

When on duty, crew members are required to stay on their assigned island. Employees not residing on the island may use state-owned housing with amenities such as cable and free parking. A non-taxable per-diem allowance is provided for meals. Daily duties include:

  1. Handling mooring lines during docking and undocking operations.
  2. Verifying and collecting boarding tickets and assisting with passenger and vehicle loading/unloading, including chocking/un-chocking wheels and operating transfer bridges.
  3. Cleaning and painting vessel structures, gear, and compartments.
  4. Participating in safety drills and operations, including lifeboat handling and retrieval.
  5. Standing helm and lookout watches in the wheelhouse.
  6. Performing security duties per the Vessel Security Plan.

Candidates must possess a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners Document (MMD) with AB endorsement and a TWIC card. The selected applicant must pass pre-employment drug screening and a physical, if required.

Qualifications:

Experience as a deck crew member on vessels operating on ocean or coastal routes.

Licensing/Certification:

U.S. Coast Guard Able Seaman and Lifeboatman certificates. Current TWIC Card.
