New York State Executive Chamber seeks a Federal Staff Assistant in Washington, DC to support federal policy and legislative liaison efforts for New York. The role blends administrative management with policy exposure, coordinating updates on federal actions and staffing briefing materials for key stakeholders.
The position requires a Bachelor’s degree and 1+ years of Capitol Hill or policy experience, with strong scheduling and tracking skills.
The New York State Washington Office of the Governor (WOG) serves as the chief federal policy and legislative liaison for the State of New York. In coordination with senior Chamber and state agency staff, the WOG identifies federal opportunities and risks to advance the Governor’s priorities. Done through both formal and informal mechanisms, the office promotes the Governor’s goals for New York through:
Congressional Legislation:WOG provides the Executive Chamber with visibility into the Congressional legislative calendar and federal priorities. As the House and Senate legislative agendas directly impact New York’s operations, state budget, and gubernatorial priorities, WOG staff collaborate closely with Chamber counsel, operations and agency personnel. Together, they partner with the New York Congressional Delegation and key committee staff to strategically shape federal policy on the State's behalf.
Federal Agency & Administrative Actions:WOG staff monitor federal agency and White House developments that directly impact New York. Staff coordinate with Deputy Secretaries, Assistant Secretaries, and legal counsels to evaluate and elevate critical federal issues affecting the State’s interests.
States & Other Interest Groups:Based in the Hall of States, staff collaborate with other state offices through partisan and non-partisan groups, including the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) and the National Governors Association (NGA). Staff represent New York’s interests by shaping NGA policy and advocacy to advance the Governor’s agenda. The DC office prepares detailed briefing materials for the Governor in anticipation of these organizations' national conferences.
The position is split roughly 50/50 between administrative management and policy support. As a Federal Staff Assistant, the incumbent will be responsible for tracking and drafting regular updates on Federal news, policies and Administrative actions relevant to New York State interests and managing office administration. The role requires a blend of administrative management and policy exposure, making it an ideal position for an early-career professional looking to enter federal relations or state government affairs.
