Job summary

Select Genetics seeks a Farm Shop Mechanic to repair and maintain farm equipment and vehicles with strong troubleshooting abilities. The role supports the Logistics team with day-to-day operations, requiring hands-on maintenance and collaboration across a team in a high-demand farming environment.

Candidates should have 1+ year of maintenance experience, be able to lift 50 lbs, and hold a valid driver’s license. CDL preferred but not required; weekend availability may be necessary.

Job description

Farm Shop Mechanic is responsible for repairs and maintenance in a timely and efficient manner in our facilities. This individual will utilize their experience with electrical, motor controls, mechanical and welding to assist the Logistics team with day-to-day operations of our equipment and vehicles, and ensure upkeep on our equipment. Farm Shop Mechanic must be able to perform hands‑on maintenance. This position requires strong troubleshooting skills and familiarity working with farm equipment. Farm Shop Mechanic schedules and completes maintenance of our vehicles and equipment.

Farm Shop Mechanic carries out all directives following the Company’s policies and applicable laws.

Farm Shop Mechanic must have strong communication and collaborative skills, working extensively with team members. Work requires frequent sitting, standing, walking and the use of numerous tools. Work is subject to tight deadlines and multitasking. Work includes long hours, including some weekends.

The following conditions may apply:

During summer months, outside temperatures can be over 100 degrees for the entire scheduled workday. During winter months, outside temperatures can be below zero for the entire scheduled workday. During and after heavy rains or snowfalls, the road in and around the farms can become extremely muddy, snow‑covered, icy and difficult to maneuver on. During different job duties, the noise inside or outside farms can become very loud. Will be exposed daily to odors, dusts and gasses that may be uncomfortable or hazardous if proper procedures are not followed.

1. Working knowledge of small engines, including troubleshooting and repair
2. Working knowledge of diesel engines, including servicing and air brakes
3. Ability to work on various brands of tractors including servicing, clutch repair, etc.
4. Ability to troubleshoot and repair skid steer tracks; prefer ability to drive a skid steer
5. Ability to weld and/or ability to learn welding skills
6. Understand and operate basic mechanical tools including electrical tools, air tools, etc.
7. Adhere to all company policies and procedures, business ethics codes, and all applicable federal and state regulations.
8. Work in a culture of strong employee teams.
9. Maintain all company facilities and equipment, including work area and company vehicle utilized.
10. Respond to all work orders in a timely and professional manner.
11. Inspect and upkeep facilities and equipment on a routine basis.
12. Transfers equipment from farm to farm.
13. Maintain and repair a variety of equipment including on‑site generators, small engines, tractors, wash crew equipment and other farm machinery.
14. To be able to work with a variety of tools and equipment including but not limited to a bobcat, electric drill, wrenches and screw drivers.
15. Report to the logistics manager any issues with interior or exterior facilities, including climate control, damages, or pest infestation problems or mishandling of birds.

1. One year minimum of Maintenance experience; prefer 2+ years experience.
2. CDL license preferred but not required; if possessing a CDL license, currently possesses or is able to obtain tanker endorsement
3. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
4. Must have the ability to adapt time and efforts to high priority areas, including accommodating to various daily hours (early mornings and late evenings) and weekends, if needed.
5. Be able to lift in excess of 50 lbs., push/pull up to 50 lbs., bend and squat, grip small objects, and be capable of repeated actions.
6. Be able to walk and stand for long periods on different surfaces including concrete.
7. The work requires Farm Shop Mechanic to have and maintain a valid driver’s license and an acceptable motor vehicle driving record.
8. Does not own or operate around backyard poultry, fowl, or swine operations off duty.
9. Proven problem solving and change facilitation abilities

The position may require Farm Shop Mechanic to be available for an extended workday. To be successful in this position, the candidate must be energetic, flexible and have determination.

Successful completion of a drug screen, work achievement verification and a motor vehicle driving record check are required.
