Job summary

Smithfield Foods in the United States is seeking a Maintenance Technician to support plant operations. Under the direction of the Maintenance Manager, you will perform building, repairs and maintenance work and help ensure equipment uptime and safety.

You will coordinate with farm managers, stock supplies on service trucks, complete work orders, and comply with environmental and OSHA safety requirements. Strong work ethic, teamwork, and ability to handle long shifts and on-call duties are

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in maintenance, construction, or related field.
• Minimum 2 years’ experience in electrical troubleshooting and repair, welding and plumbing.
• Must have minimum 2 years’ experience with Smithfield Maintenance.
• Able to operate a 4WD truck and trailer; heavy equipment experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform maintenance and repairs as requested by production and maintenance leadership.
• Schedule work with farm managers and coordinate help from farm staff as needed.
• Stock supplies on service truck to minimize driving time and delays.
• Complete work promptly and submit final report on work order to maintenance manager.
• Assist in prioritization/scheduling of maintenance orders and projects.
• Ensure preventative maintenance is performed as scheduled.
• Comply with environmental laws and Smithfield’s procedures; report environmental issues.
• Follow safety requirements, including OSHA trenching standards; be ready for after-hours emergencies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Your Opportunity

Working under the direction of the Maintenance Manager is responsible for building, repairs and maintenance work.

Core Responsibilities

• - Responsible for maintenance and repairs as requested by production and directed by the maintenance leader including: Scheduling work with the applicable farm manager including arranging for help from a farm employee if needed.
• - Minimizing driving time by assuring appropriate supplies for each job are stocked on the service truck.
• - Completing work in a timely manner and submitting a final report on the work order to the maintenance manager.

• - Assist supervisor in coordinating prioritization and scheduling of maintenance orders and projects.
• - Responsible for preventative maintenance as scheduled by the maintenance manager.
• - Responsible for being in compliance with all environmental laws and procedures to which Smithfield Hog Production subscribes.
• - Report all environmental issues immediately to their supervisor.
• - Read and understand the company’s emergency notification process and will be responsible for reviewing that policy at their worksite.
• - Responsible for understanding all safety requirements of the job and for performing the job in compliance with the safety requirements including OSHA’s trenching standards.
• - All other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

• - High School Diploma or GED equivalent required.
• - Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a maintenance, construction, or related field.
• - Minimum of 2 years’ experience in electrical troubleshooting and repair, welding experience and plumbing experience.
• - Must have a minimum of 2 years’ experience with Smithfield Maintenance.
• - Must be able to operate a 4WD truck and trailer.
• - Ability to operate a backhoe, forklift and other heavy equipment, preferred.
• - Must have good organizational skills.
• - Must have good communications skills.
• - Must be willing to follow biosecurity rules.
• - Must maintain PQA Plus Certification.
• - Rotating days off requires weekend and holiday work.
• - Must be able to work an average 45 hour week with average 9 hour workday, which can vary frequently.
• - Be on call, if needed.
• - Be willing to respond to emergencies after hours, if needed.
• - Must be able to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
• - Must be able to do basic math and record accurate records.
• - Ability to work well with others in fast paced, dynamic environment.
• - Ability to be respectful, approachable and team oriented while building strong working relationships and a positive work environment.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• - Must be able to walk and stand on concrete for 9 – 12 hours per day.
• - Must be able to frequently climb over, under, and around penning.
• - Must be able to occasionally lift 50 lbs.
• - Must be able to tolerate animal dander, manure, dust, odors, and frequently noisy conditions.
