A Day in the Life as a Family Service Worker:

As a Family Service Worker, you’ll play an essential role in collaborating with families with an emphasis on social service, parent engagement, and health/nutrition. A Family Service Worker is responsible for supporting the agency’s mission by identifying goals, strengths and necessary services and supports with families. Your day will involve:

  • Provides support for all families and, in partnership with families, makes referrals to community services provided by public and private agencies and organizations as needs are identified.
  • Coordinates with teaching staff regarding the implementation of parent involvement programs including planning parent meetings, actively supporting parent committee officers, soliciting parent involvement in the classroom, and other parent engagement activities.
  • Supports the program’s recruitment efforts to best service eligible families by developing knowledge of and working relationship with community agencies and resources.
  • Maintains accurate and up-to-date records as it pertains to information required by the Head Start Performance Standards.

Requirements

Qualifications to Be a Family Service Worker:

To excel in this role, you’ll need:

  • Education: BA in Human Services or related field; within 18 months of hire, complete a credential or certification in social work, human services, family services, counseling, or related field.
  • Experience: Previous experience working in the field of Early Childhood Education or family/human services preferred.
  • Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to effectively communicate with and relate to income-eligible families; ability to coordinate and work with human services agencies, community organizations and other team members.
  • Characteristics: Attention to detail, confidentiality, problem-solving skills, and a commitment to fostering a positive workplace and early childhood classroom experience.
  • Technical: successful completion of criminal record check, CPR/First Aid certification.

A valid driver’s license and reliable transportation may be required for occasional travel between program locations.
