Program Overview

Our Intercept program serves a broad population of youth, including those involved with multiple child-serving systems and those at high risk of removal from their families. The program specializes in diverting youth from out of home placements by helping their families safely maintain youth in their home environment. This position is responsible for providing intensive home-based therapy to families.

Position Overview

• Carry small caseload of 4-6 families
• Hold family sessions with each family 3 times a week scheduled at the convenience of the families
• 3 supervision meetings a week
• Web-based documentation (voice recognition technology in most locations)
• Provide on-call availability to families during the week, one weekend each month
• Drive up to 60-80 miles to meet with families in the home
• Counselors provide treatment in individual families' homes in a wide array of settings and communities
• Conduct family assessments which include collecting information about clients using interview, case history, and observation techniques, and appraisal and assessment methods to develop a psycho-social assessment
• Monitors the quality of all services performed for the family by outside agencies, coordinating services with the treatment plan and teaching families to attain and monitor services after treatment is completed
• Staff will be scheduled to be on call which can include holidays, weekends, and evenings
• Effectively provides case management and customer relations. Will need to coordinate and organize their own work schedule and vary appointments to fit the needs and schedules of the client family (including meeting times after normal 'business hours')
• Makes contact with the family and conducts home visits several times each week.
• Visits the schools and establishes working relationships between the parents and schools ensuring reasonable school performance by youth. Develops parental school involvement through education and support in order to define the most appropriate classroom and school setting with school system
• Arranges and participates in psychiatric and psychological consultations
• Coordinates the initiation of the independent living component with the youth when applicable
• Monitors the child's and family's progress daily
• Coordinates weekend visits of youth including meeting TLOA goals from out-of-home placements. Assists in arranging or providing transportation as needed
• Arranges necessary case conferences involving parents, state workers, and other treatment providers to deal with specific needs of families and youth. Coordinates wraparound services as identified
• Provides evidence based therapeutic treatment interventions for assigned caseloads
• Empowers the family to develop and utilize a social support network, including family, friends, and community services
• Conducts peer interventions, consulting with the youth, parents, siblings, teachers, and peers to ensure the youth develops a pro-social peer group
• Primary individual interventions involve teaching problem solving skills and perspective taking
• Provides individual cognitive behavioral therapy to child, parents or other family members as needed
• Identifies and locates viable appropriate family members or interested relatives to provide family placements and respites as indicated
• Engages and prepares family to accept responsibility for return of child to home environment
• Attends weekly treatment team meetings, consisting of several counselors and one supervisory counselor, and provides and receives support and consultation regarding each counselor's caseloads
• Coordinates treatment team meetings for youth in residential or treatment foster care placements
• Serves as primary contact with state custodial designees
• Participates in weekly conferences with consultants concerning case strategies and case progress and in quarterly booster training sessions concerning specialized treatment topics
• Maintains records, both factual and interpretive, for each youth and family including admission, weekly, monthly and discharge records
• Documentation MUST be completed according to quality and timely standards developed by Youth Villages
• Participates in court for the youth and family as indicated
• Analyzes information collected to develop family treatment plan and updates regularly.
• Ability and means to drive frequently; provide proof of liability and property damage insurance on vehicle used, and possession of a valid driver’s license is required
• Act as an advocate for the client when the client may face legal charges. Attend all school meetings, DCS meetings, and court hearings. Provide transportation to all events

Additional Information

Schedule is flexible and non-traditional; based around the availability of youth and families served. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license, a personal vehicle to use for work purposes and auto insurance. Community Based staff will be reimbursed for applicable mileage

Qualifications

Qualifications for Family Intervention Specialists

It is Youth Villages’ policy to hire only counselors that meet the Qualified Professional standard in the state of North Carolina. Please refer to the requirements below to ensure that your education and experience qualify you for the position to which you are applying.

Master’s Degree Applicants:

Must possess degree at time of application. Degree must be in a related field of study (refer to list below). Must have one year, pre- OR post-graduation, full-time experience (2,000 hours) with designated population (refer to list below)

Bachelor’s Degree Applicants:

Must possess degree at time of application. Degree must be in a related field of study (refer to list below). Must have two years, pre- OR post-graduation, full-time experience (4,000 hours) with designated population (refer to list below)

Licensed Applicants:

Must hold one of the following licenses in the state of North Carolina: LCMHCA, LMFTA, LCSWA, LPA, or LCSASA

Degrees Accepted:

Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy. Exceptions may be made for other degrees in a behavioral science that includes a minimum of 30 semester hours in human development, human behavior, child development, family intervention technique, diagnostic measures, or therapeutic techniques.

Experience Accepted:

Experience must be with at-risk youth, i.e., youth with one or more of the following behaviors: Truancy, Alcohol/Substance Abuse, Homicidal/Suicidal Ideations, Problem Sexual Behavior, Verbal/Physical Aggression, Runaway, Antisocial Behaviors. Experience should include clinical case management or practice of therapeutic interventions.

Other Skills Required:

Excellent written, verbal, and oral skills. Exceptional time-management skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Experience doing family therapy or providing MST services is a plus.

Salary

$58,000 - $66,000 / year based on education and clinical license
