Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Fall Intern to develop first-principles, physics-based battery models at the Global Technical Center in Warren, MI. You will advance Multiphysics modeling across electrochemical and mechanical domains, contributing to design decisions and next-generation EV battery technology.

You will collaborate with experts in electrochemistry and materials science, publish findings, and participate in internal reviews.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. student focusing on electrochemistry or battery modeling with expected graduation by 2028.
  • Experience developing physics-based finite-element battery modeling and electrode microstructure simulation.
  • Strong foundation in electrochemistry, solid mechanics, thermodynamics, and transport phenomena.
  • Experience developing coupled Multiphysics models across scales.
  • Strong programming proficiency in C++ and Python for scientific computing and data analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and validate physics-based battery models for multiple chemistries and formats.
  • Implement finite-element methods for complex electrode microstructures and tomography.
  • Build coupled electrochemical and mechanical models across scales.
  • Investigate degradation mechanisms via Multiphysics modeling.
  • Apply models to predict performance, lifetime, and safety in real-world conditions.
  • Translate outputs into actionable guidance for design and materials selection.
  • Integrate models into multi-scale simulation frameworks and toolkits.
  • Lead technical problem solving grounded in physical intuition and analysis.
  • Publish and present work in journals, conferences, and internal reviews.
  • Contribute to IP and patents in battery modeling and design.
