Position Summary

The Faith Formation Assistant is a part-time position (typically 20 hours per week) that assists the Director of Religious Education with duties related to faith formation and the Business Manager with reference checks and Safe Environment Training (SET) coordination for volunteers and potential new hires.

Key Responsibilities

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule based on the business need of the parish, including but not limited to every other weekend
  • Registration:
    • Assist with updating the registration packet
    • Assist families with registration process in person or by phone
    • Secure sacramental documents where applicable
    • Review registration forms and manually enter registrations into the parish database
    • Process faith formation payments
    • Help with classroom assignments
  • Faith Formation Classes
    • Make copies for the catechists
    • Track classroom attendance
    • Accept payments
    • Work directly with catechists and parents where necessary
  • Catechist Formation
    • Schedule catechist formation sessions
    • Make copies when necessary
    • Responsibility of set up and clean up for each session
  • Sacraments/ Rites/ Rituals
    • Prepare certificates
    • Secure any necessary materials for the specific masses
    • Prepare and provide families with specific written information regarding the upcoming sacraments (e.g. date, time, dress code, directions, etc.)
    • Logging individual sacramental information into the parish database
    • Preparing a spreadsheet for Pat for proper documentation into the sacramental books
  • Calendar
    • Plan/ assist in planning the Faith Formation calendar year
    • Manage the calendar and schedule for all events (e.g. classes, catechist formation, parent meetings, Safe Environment Training, retreats, workshops, etc.)
  • Retreat
    • Plan, organize and implement the 2nd grade First Communion retreat
  • Baptisms
    • Getting in touch with parents whose children will be getting Baptized (6 years of age and older)
    • Manage their documentation and ensure it is stored on file
  • Safe Environment Training Coordinator (SET)
    • Process new applications for volunteers and potential new hires as necessary
    • Maintain contact with all volunteers and employees as necessary to update information and ensure 100% compliance with required background checks and SET courses
    • Work closely with the Diocese of Raleigh and Business Manager in all aspects
    • Schedule SET sessions as necessary
    • Preparation of all training materials needed
    • Set up and clean up for all SET sessions
  • Additional Faith Formation and SET-specific job duties that may arise based on business need
Minimum Requirements

  • Minimum level of education: High School Diploma
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish)
  • Successful completion of criminal background and reference checks is a condition of employment
  • Completion of Diocese-sponsored Safe Environment Training is required upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • College/university degree preferred or commensurate with experience in lieu of a college/university degree
  • Practicing Catholic
  • One year of experience working with the public, a religious institution, or non-profit organization preferred
