Primary Purpose of the Position

Broadwell College of Business and Economics at Fayetteville State University seeks to hire a temporary Laboratory Technician for the Construction Project Management Program beginning Summer 2026. This hands‑on role will support faculty and student learning. The role involves laboratory testing of construction materials—including soil, concrete, and masonry—per ASTM standards. Maintaining lab equipment, preparing materials for instructional use, ensuring safety compliance, and assisting faculty and students with hands‑on learning and research activities. The position requires physical stamina, attention to safety protocols, and the ability to obtain industry certifications such as ACI and ICC. Successful candidates will demonstrate a commitment to quality, safety, and professionalism.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain and calibrate lab equipment and tools used in construction management experiments and demonstrations.
  • Prepare lab materials and setups for instructional sessions, including mock‑ups, models, and testing apparatus.
  • Monitor lab safety protocols and ensure compliance with institutional and regulatory standards.
  • Assist faculty with the development and implementation of lab‑based curriculum and research projects.
  • Provide technical support to students during lab sessions, including guidance on equipment usage and safety procedures.
  • Maintain inventory of lab supplies and coordinate procurement as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and repair minor equipment issues or coordinate with vendors for servicing.
  • Document lab activities, maintenance logs, and safety inspections.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Prior experience in a lab or technical support role, preferably in a construction or engineering environment.
  • Familiarity with construction materials, tools, and testing equipment.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic academic setting.
  • Knowledge of safety standards and protocols relevant to construction labs.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Willingness to work collaboratively with faculty on projects contributing to the mission and goals of Fayetteville State University.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to assist faculty in planning and implementing class instructions, meetings, i.e. student orientations, lectures, receptions and workshops, etc.
  • Willing to assist faculty in conducting evaluations and assessments.
  • Willingness to assist with general responsibilities and other responsibilities as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in an academic or research lab setting.
  • Certifications in OSHA or other relevant safety programs.
  • Proficiency in software tools used in construction management (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, project scheduling tools).
  • Hands‑on experience with construction lab equipment, such as Compression testing machines, slump cones, Vicat apparatus, Aggregate Impact Value testing machines, sieve shakers, and core drilling machines.
  • Professional Certification, such as:
    • NICET Level II certification in Construction Materials Testing in one or more of the following categories: Asphalt, Concrete, Soils.
    • NICET Level II certification in Geotechnical in one or more of the following categories: Construction, Laboratory, Exploration, Generalist.
    • ICC certification in one or more of the following categories: Reinforced Concrete, Spray‑applied Fireproofing, Structural Masonry, Prestressed/Post‑Tensioned Concrete, Structural Steel - Bolting, Structural Steel - Welding.
